Which Royal Enfield 650 to buy: the seven twins compared

All seven use the same 648cc parallel twin, so the choice comes down to price, kerb weight and seat height, and Royal Enfield's own ex-showroom Chennai prices now run from ₹3,37,909 to ₹4,39,960.

Royal Enfield now sells seven motorcycles built on the same 648cc air and oil cooled parallel twin: Interceptor 650, Continental GT 650, Bullet 650, Classic 650, Bear 650, Shotgun 650 and Super Meteor 650. The engine is near identical in all of them, around 47 PS and 52 Nm, so nobody is buying extra speed here. What changes is how much you pay, how heavy the bike is, how tall the seat is and how far it will go between fuel stops.

The short answer. If you want the cheapest and lightest way into a 650, it is the Interceptor 650, which starts at ₹3,37,909 ex-showroom Chennai for Canyon Red or Cali Green, with a 218 kg kerb weight. If you ride two up on highways, the Super Meteor 650 makes the most sense, with a 740 mm seat and the biggest tank in the family at 15.7 litres. If you want a 650 that will handle a broken road without drama, the Bear 650 starts at ₹3.78 lakh, has 184 mm of ground clearance and is the only one tuned for more torque, 56.5 Nm at 5,150 rpm.

What each one costs, and what the colour adds

Royal Enfield's variants are mostly paint, chrome and trim, and the spread inside one model is wide. The Interceptor 650 runs from ₹3,37,909 to ₹3,69,137 for the Mark 2. The Continental GT 650 is listed at ₹3,58,427. The Classic 650 starts at ₹3,67,592 in Hotrod colours and goes to ₹3,82,097 for Black Chrome. The Bullet 650, which shares the Classic's chassis and 243 kg kerb weight, was launched at ₹3,64,856 ex-showroom Chennai. The Shotgun 650 starts at ₹4,01,002 and the Super Meteor 650 at ₹4,05,988, rising to ₹4,39,960 for the Celestial.

All of these are ex-showroom Chennai figures from Royal Enfield's own configurator. Your on-road price will be higher once registration, road tax and insurance go in, and road tax differs by state, so a Bengaluru buyer and a Chennai buyer will not pay the same for the same bike.

Weight and seat height decide more than power

This is where buyers get it wrong. The Continental GT 650 is the lightest at 214 kg, followed by the Bear 650 at 216 kg and the Interceptor at 218 kg. The Classic 650 and Bullet 650 are the heaviest at 243 kg, and the Shotgun 650 sits at 240 kg. Thirty kilos is a lot when you are reversing out of a basement parking slot or picking the bike up.

Seat height runs the other way. The Super Meteor 650 is the friendliest for shorter riders at 740 mm, then the Shotgun 650 at 795 mm, the Classic 650 and Bullet 650 at 800 mm, and the Continental GT 650 at 804 mm with clip-on bars that load your wrists in traffic.

The trade-offs nobody mentions in the showroom

Range is a real difference. The Continental GT 650 carries only 12.5 litres, the Bear 650 13.7 litres and the Shotgun 650 13.8 litres, against 14.8 litres on the Classic and Bullet and 15.7 litres on the Super Meteor. Royal Enfield's own Shotgun page quotes about 22 kmpl under CMVR testing, so a small tank on a touring weekend means more stops.

Practical advice: shortlist on seat height and weight first, ride both your finalists, then pick the colour you can live with instead of the one that adds ₹15,000 to the bill. The engine will feel the same either way.
