What OBD-2B means on your new bike, and why prices went up

OBD-2B is the second stage of on-board diagnostics that India made mandatory on two-wheelers, and it is why a Splendor Plus went up by ₹1,750 and a Shine 100 by ₹1,867.

Short answer: OBD-2B stands for On-Board Diagnostics stage 2, part B. It is a set of rules under BS6 Phase 2 that makes your bike or scooter watch its own emission system while you ride, and switch on a warning light when something stops working properly. It is not a new engine, not more power and not better mileage by itself. On most commuters the engine hardware stayed the same and the price went up by under ₹2,000.

OBD-2 became mandatory on all two-wheelers sold in India from 1 April 2023, and part of the system uses a standardised 16-pin diagnostic connector so a workshop can plug in a scan tool, as Autocar India explained in its BS6 Phase 2 primer. Manufacturers then rolled out the stage 2B tune across their ranges, which is why so many familiar models were relaunched with almost no visible change.

What the system is actually watching

The electronics watch the parts that keep exhaust gases clean. The ECU looks for engine misfires and has to tell an occasional stumble apart from a repeating fault. It watches the lambda sensor, which measures oxygen in the exhaust and sets the air to fuel ratio that the catalytic converter needs to do its job. BikeDekho's explainer lists the other inputs in the loop, including engine and coolant temperature, fuel pressure and throttle position, and says the point of stage 2B is monitoring emissions in real time on our roads rather than only against fixed lab threshold values.

When the ECU sees something it does not like, it stores a diagnostic trouble code and lights the malfunction indicator lamp, the check engine light. That light is now a normal sight on a 100cc commuter, and reading the code behind it needs a dealer scan tool. BikeDekho's point is worth taking seriously: this pushes more work towards authorised workshops and away from the corner mechanic.

What it added to the price

Hero updated the Splendor Plus for 2025 with an OBD-2B compliant tune on the same 97.2cc engine, with the mechanical setup unchanged. AutoX reported the range starting at ₹78,926 and the Xtec 2.0 at ₹85,501, with a ₹1,750 increase across all variants.

Honda's Shine 100 became the first OBD-2B compliant 100cc commuter in India in March 2025, at ₹68,767 ex-showroom Delhi, which ZigWheels reported as ₹1,867 more than before.

Honda's own release for the 2025 Activa, dated 23 January 2025, says the 109.51cc PGM-Fi engine is now OBD2B compliant, with prices starting at ₹80,950. Suzuki finished the job on its scooters in March 2025, with Bike India noting the Avenis at ₹93,200, the Burgman Street at ₹95,800 and the Burgman Street EX at ₹1.16 lakh, all ex-showroom.

What it changes for you as an owner

Three practical things. First, do not ignore the check engine light on a new commuter the way owners ignored a blinking clock on older bikes. A dead lambda sensor will make the bike run rich, drink more fuel and can cook the catalytic converter, which is the expensive part.

Second, service records matter more, because a stored fault code is evidence and a dealer visit is the only way to clear it properly.

Third, on fuel: Autocar India notes that BS6 bikes with a closed loop fuel injection system can compensate for ethanol content up to E27.5, while older BS4 carburetted machines cannot and will run lean. If you still ride a carburetted bike alongside a new one, that is the real difference E20 petrol makes.
