The short answer: a modern litre-class bike wants attention roughly once a year, or every 10,000 to 16,000 km, and the big-ticket jobs come much later than most buyers fear. Ducati's prepaid plan for a Monster starts at ₹25,999 for two years or 15,000 km, which is the clearest published number anyone in this segment gives you.

Here is how to work out your own bill, step by step.

Step 1: read the interval, not the rumour

Start with the service book, because intervals differ a lot by brand and by engine family.

Ducati's V4 Granturismo bikes are the easy ones. The Multistrada V4 Rally runs an oil service every 15,000 km or 24 months, and the major service only every 60,000 km, because that engine uses valve springs and a timing chain instead of desmodromic valve gear.

On older desmo engines, the famous Desmo service, where valve clearances are checked and timing belts, air filter and spark plugs are changed, falls due every 24,000 km to 30,000 km depending on the model, as Autocar India reported when Ducati began moving mid-range engines to springs.

A boxer BMW works differently. A schedule drawn from the 2024 R 1300 GS manual puts the standard service at 10,000 km or once a year, with the bigger job at 20,000 km, which adds a valve clearance check, rear bevel gear oil, air filter and spark plugs. Brake fluid goes after the first year, then every two years.

Triumph does not publish the interval on its India warranty page, so read the handbook stamp pages and keep every service inside the window. Harley's schedule is tied to the warranty conditions, so your dealer's service advisor should show you the exact km and month limits in writing.

Step 2: check what the warranty already pays for

Warranty cover changes the maths, because the first few years of defect repairs may cost you nothing.

BMW Motorrad India moved to a three year, unlimited kilometre standard warranty across the range, excluding the HP4 Race, valid worldwide, with optional cover for the fourth and fifth year and no exclusions in that extension.

Triumph gives a 24 month unlimited mileage warranty from the date of first registration on road bikes. It explicitly leaves out wear items such as spark plugs, oil filters, tyres, brake pads and chains, and the battery is covered for 12 months only. Off-road TF models get one month.

Ducati's India answer has been Ever Red, a 24 month unlimited mileage extension run with Corporate Warranties India, which can be bought on a new bike or during the standard warranty. Harley-Davidson India added a two year extension on top of its two year factory warranty back in April 2015, underwritten by ICICI Lombard, taking total cover to four years.

None of this covers consumables. Pads, tyres, chains and clutch plates stay your problem.

Step 3: price the prepaid plan against pay-as-you-go

Ducati Protect, launched in India in April 2025, is the most transparent plan on sale. Protect Plus covers two years or 15,000 km, Protect Pro covers four years or 30,000 km, and both include spare parts and labour for every scheduled service. Brake pads, clutch plates and tyres are excluded. The plan is transferable to the next owner.

Note the pattern is not intuitive. Protect Pro costs ₹68,999 on the Monster but ₹52,999 on the Multistrada V4, so always ask for a quote against your exact model.

Triumph's equivalent, the Triumph Service Plan announced in March 2021, bundles three periodic services plus two 21-point checkups over two years. Triumph's own page says the packages fix your servicing cost for up to 24 months, are transferable on resale and add a wash and a health check.

Before you sign, do two sums. One, add up the scheduled services the plan covers inside your real annual mileage, since a 15,000 km cap is generous for a weekend bike and tight for a tourer. Two, find out how far your nearest authorised workshop is, because a plan is only worth what you can actually use.
