How to check if the new bike you are buying is old stock

Before you pay the balance amount, ask the dealer for the chassis number of the exact bike being invoiced to you, then read the tenth character of the 17 character VIN. On most motorcycles that character is the model year code. Webbikeworld's VIN year chart lists L for 2020, M for 2021, N for 2022, P for 2023, R for 2024, S for 2025 and T for 2026. If the code does not match the year you are buying in, the bike has been standing somewhere.

Why there is always stock sitting in the showroom

Two sets of numbers explain this. SIAM counts wholesale dispatches, which is the factory sending bikes to dealers. FADA counts retail, which is the bike actually sold to a customer and entered in Vahan.

In September 2026 SIAM reported 24,63,103 two-wheeler dispatches, up 13.5 percent, with scooters at 9,95,576 units and motorcycles at 14,12,010 units. FADA reported 17,90,188 two-wheeler retails for the same month, the segment's best ever September. For April to September 2026 the two sets read 1,20,86,812 units dispatched and 1,10,43,407 units retailed. Bikes in that gap are parked in dealer yards and stockyards, and festive loading before Navratri and Diwali makes the pile bigger.

The five minute check at the dealership

1. Ask for the chassis number in writing on the quotation or booking form, not just read out to you.
2. Read the tenth character against the year chart above. Do this before the balance payment, because once the bike is invoiced and registered in your name you have no leverage left.
3. Ask for the chassis numbers of 2 to 3 units of the same variant in stock, and take the newest one. Large dealerships usually have a choice.
4. Pick up brochures from different months. Autocar India's year end buying guide suggests exactly this, to spot equipment that was quietly dropped, and to haggle if your bike is missing kit the earlier brochure listed.
5. If the only unit available is an older build, ask for the value in writing. Autocar India notes that year end discounts range from a few thousand rupees to a few lakh depending on the model, and that dealers also add accessories such as mud flaps and floor mats, insurance deals and cheaper extended warranty. Get quotes from 2 to 3 dealerships before you start negotiating.

What old stock does and does not cost you

The warranty clock is usually safe. Royal Enfield's published warranty terms say the warranty period begins from the date of the retail sales invoice to the first owner, and that once it has begun it cannot be stopped or interrupted. So a bike built eight months ago still gives you the full term from the day you buy it.

The real costs are elsewhere. The bike has stood through months of heat, dust and rain. Any used buyer in future can read the same chassis number you read, so the build year will come up again at resale.

Electric scooters need one extra question. FADA data puts EVs at 11.58 percent of September 2026 two-wheeler retail, up from 8.17 percent a year earlier, so far more buyers are now taking delivery of a battery that may have been idle in a yard. Ask for the build date, ask when the pack was last charged, and insist on a full charge cycle and a proper test ride before you sign.
