BMW R 1300 GS or GS Adventure: which one to buy in India

The Adventure costs about ₹3 lakh more, carries 11 more litres of fuel and weighs 32 kg extra, and that last number is what should decide it for most Indian riders.

The short answer

Buy the R 1300 GS if most of your riding is city work, weekend ghat runs and the occasional 400 km highway day. Buy the R 1300 GS Adventure if you ride two up with hard luggage, do 800 km to 1,000 km days, or head into Ladakh, Spiti and the Northeast where the gap between fuel pumps decides your route.

That is the whole decision. Both bikes use the same engine. BMW quotes 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm for both, with shaft drive and the same electronics menu of Rain, Road, Eco and Enduro modes. What you pay extra for on the Adventure is a 30 litre aluminium tank instead of 19 litres, more suspension travel, a bigger screen and a touring stance.

What the 32 kg and the 11 extra litres feel like in India

Kerb weight goes from 237 kg on the GS to 269 kg on the Adventure. On the move at 80 kph that difference disappears. It comes back every time you do a U turn on a narrow Bengaluru road, push the bike backwards out of a sloped parking slot, or pick it up alone on a gravel shoulder in Lahaul. If you are under about 170 cm and ride alone, the lighter bike is the one you will use more.

The 30 litre tank is the Adventure's single best argument. It buys range on routes where petrol is 150 km to 200 km apart, and it means you are not planning the day around fuel. The cost is a tall, wide, top heavy feel at walking pace.

Seat height matters more than most buyers expect. BMW lists 850 mm on the base R 1300 GS and offers seat height variants from the factory, while Autocar India lists 820 mm and 870 mm seats for the Adventure. Sit on both bikes with the exact seat you intend to buy, with your riding boots on, before you sign anything.

What they cost now, and why the number keeps moving

BMW Motorrad India launched the R 1300 GS in June 2024 at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹20,95,000 for the Pro variant, as a completely built up import. The R 1300 GS Adventure followed in January 2025 at an introductory ₹22,95,000, with deliveries from April 2025.

Those are not today's prices. BMW Motorrad India raised prices by up to 6 per cent from 1 January 2026, citing the rupee's depreciation against the dollar and the euro plus higher input and logistics costs. BikeWale currently lists the R 1300 GS Pro at ₹23,50,000 ex-showroom and the Adventure's Racing Red at ₹26,50,000, which is roughly a ₹3 lakh gap. Because both are CBU imports, expect that number to change again.

The trade-offs to settle before you book

The styles ladder is where budgets break. On the Adventure, Style GS Trophy is listed at ₹27,90,000, the same trim with Automated Shift Assistant at ₹28,70,000 and Option 719 with radar adaptive cruise control at ₹30,05,000. Autocar India puts the Adventure's on road Delhi window at ₹28.21 lakh to ₹32.10 lakh. Add luggage and crash protection and a fully kitted Adventure costs what a decent SUV does.

Three practical points. One, the Automated Shift Assistant removes the clutch lever, which is a genuine gift in stop and go traffic, but it is an ₹80,000 class decision inside the same trim, so ride one first. Two, service on either bike means a BMW Motorrad dealer, so check how far your nearest one is before you fall for the bigger bike. Three, if you are stepping up from a 650, take the lighter GS. The Adventure rewards riders who already know how to move 270 kg at 5 kph.
