Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG CNG scores 5-star Bharat NCAP rating

India's first CNG SUV to score five stars

Mahindra's XUV 3XO ZNG, the CNG version of its sub four metre SUV, has scored a five star rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests. The result, announced on November 6, makes it the first sub compact CNG SUV tested by the agency to achieve the top rating with its factory fitted CNG tank in place during the crash.

The ZNG scored 29.36 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection, the same score as the petrol and diesel XUV 3XO when that version was tested in November 2024. Child occupant protection came in at 45 out of 49 points, two points higher than the 43 scored by the petrol and diesel car. Mahindra says the improved child protection score applies to XUV 3XO units from a specified production batch onward, not only to the CNG variant.

Why the CNG tank matters here

Most CNG cars sold in India carry an aftermarket or dealer fitted cylinder bolted into the boot, which Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP have repeatedly flagged as a crash risk because these kits are not engineered into the car's structure or validated in the same crash tests as the base car. Mahindra's ZNG instead uses a dual cylinder CNG setup built into the vehicle from the factory, and that is the setup Bharat NCAP crash tested, not a petrol car with a kit added later.

This is also why the agency and Mahindra are drawing attention to the result. Tata's Nexon CNG, the ZNG's direct rival, has not been separately crash tested with its CNG tank by Bharat NCAP, so buyers in this segment have had no official comparison point until now.

The XUV 3XO ZNG was launched on October 15, 2026, with bookings opening on October 20. Prices for the range start at ₹9.99 lakh ex-showroom and go up to ₹12.27 lakh for the top variant, according to CarDekho's report on the launch. Every variant gets six airbags, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, a tyre pressure monitoring system and a reversing camera, along with CNG specific safety systems including gas leak detection built into the car rather than added on.

What this means for buyers

For someone cross shopping a sub four metre CNG SUV, this is the first time Bharat NCAP has rated a car in this exact configuration, factory CNG tank and all. The score itself does not call for any owner action, there is no recall or fault here. It simply gives buyers a documented safety rating for the CNG variant rather than having to assume it matches the petrol car's rating. Owners of existing petrol and diesel XUV 3XO units built from the batch Mahindra has specified can also expect their car's listed child occupant protection score to read 45 rather than 43 going forward, again with nothing to do at a service centre since this is a test result, not a part replacement.

Bharat NCAP has rated more than 35 cars sold in India since it began testing in 2023, and the large majority have scored five stars, a pattern safety researchers attribute partly to carmakers now engineering to the test before sending vehicles for assessment.
