Honda AmazeIndia gets a global premiere for once
Honda Cars India has named its first all electric SUV for the country. The company confirmed on November 4 that the model will be called Honda ALPHA, and that it will have its world premiere in India on December 2, 2026. This is the first time Honda has chosen India as the launch market for a global electric vehicle rather than a market that gets a model after it has already gone on sale elsewhere.
The name comes from the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Honda says it is meant to signal a fresh start for buyers moving to electric mobility. Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, said in the company's statement that "Honda ALPHA represents our ambition to bring advanced electric mobility to our customers in India while delivering the quality, reliability and joy of driving that Honda is known for."
The design traces back to the Honda 0 Alpha concept shown at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025. The production ALPHA will also be the first Honda car in India to carry the company's redesigned global H mark, replacing the familiar badge on every Honda sold here once it arrives.
Built in Rajasthan, meant for export
Honda will build the ALPHA at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, the same factory that currently makes the City, Amaze and Elevate. Honda Cars India has said the plant will also serve as the global production base for the model going forward, which points to the ALPHA being exported from India rather than only sold here. That would mark a shift for Honda's India operation, which has so far built petrol and hybrid cars mainly for the domestic market and a handful of neighbouring countries.
Reports following the announcement place the ALPHA in the midsize electric SUV segment, where it would compete with the Hyundai Creta Electric, the Mahindra BE 6 and the Maruti e Vitara. Honda has not released a battery pack size, a range figure or a price for the ALPHA, and any numbers circulating before the December 2 debut remain unconfirmed by the company.
What it means for Indian buyers
For now there is no price and no booking window. What Honda has fixed is the date, December 2, 2026, and the fact that India gets the car before any other market. That matters because Honda has been a slow mover on electric cars in India compared with Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata and Maruti Suzuki, all of which already sell electric SUVs here. A midsize electric SUV built in Rajasthan, with India positioned as the export base, would also be Honda's clearest commitment yet to building electric vehicles in the country rather than importing them.
Buyers waiting on an electric SUV from Honda should expect full specifications, variants and pricing only around or after the December 2 premiere. Until then, the Creta Electric, BE 6 and e Vitara remain the only midsize electric SUV choices from Honda's direct rivals.
