The helmet-free concept with a steel cage and a four-point belt now sits in India's design register, which protects a shape and nothing else.

BMW Motorrad has filed a design registration in India for the Vision CE, the self-balancing electric scooter it showed as a concept in 2025. The filing surfaced in Indian reporting on 21 October 2026, when ETV Bharat published the drawings, and Autocar India followed on 22 October. Both are clear on the limit of what this means. A design filing covers appearance. It is not a launch, a price or even a promise that the thing will be built.

The drawings match the concept closely. There is a tubular protective cage over and in front of the rider, a four-point seatbelt, and a self-balancing system that holds the scooter upright when it is stopped. It is a single-seater, with discs at both ends and a belt drive from a mid-mounted motor. The proportions are low and long, close to the CE 04 that BMW already sells here. BMW has not released battery capacity, power, range or charging time for the Vision CE. One UK report, Buck City Biker, puts the Indian record at number 480802-001 under the broad heading of motor scooters, and makes the same point that registering a design in India does not mean BMW intends to sell it here.

What the cage actually claims, and what it does not

BMW's pitch with the Vision CE is that the cage and the belt let you ride without a helmet, gloves or a jacket. That is a claim about the vehicle's design, made at a concept stage. It says nothing about type approval or about helmet rules in any market, and the Indian filing does not address either. Treat the helmet-free line as marketing until a regulator anywhere agrees with it.

For context on where BMW stands in India today, the CE 04 electric scooter is on sale at ₹15.25 lakh ex-showroom, according to Autocar India. A production Vision CE, if it ever exists, would be a far more complicated machine than that.

India's design register is filling up with odd two-wheelers

The Vision CE is not an outlier. Hero MotoCorp patented the Vida NEX 2, a self-balancing electric trike with motorcycle-style seating and a leaning front end, with Autocar India reporting that filing on 30 June 2026. VinFast has filed for the Rasad electric maxi-scooter. Ducati has filed for the new Monster. Manufacturers register designs in India cheaply and early, partly to keep copies out and partly to keep options open, so the register is a useful early-warning system and a poor crystal ball.

On four wheels, the same week brought a more concrete one. CarWale reported on 12 October 2026 that Mahindra has patented the Vision S, the last of its NU_IQ-based Vision concepts to reach the register after the X, T and SXT. That one has been caught testing on Indian roads, which is a much stronger signal than a drawing on its own.

What an Indian buyer should take from this

Nothing to plan around yet. BMW Motorrad has not commented on whether the Vision CE will reach production in any market, let alone India. What the filing does tell you is that BMW thought India was worth the registration fee, which is a small but real data point about where it sees self-balancing commuters eventually making sense. We will update this when BMW says something official. Until then it stays labelled as filed.
