Which walkie-talkie is legal to buy in India for a 4x4 convoy

Only two radio options are licence free for a club trail run, and the CCPA fined Amazon, Flipkart and Meta ₹10 lakh each in January 2026 for listings that pretended otherwise.

If you run a convoy of Thars, Jimnys and Gurkhas up a plantation trail and want radios instead of shouted hand signals, your legal shopping list in India is short. A handheld that transmits only in the 446.0 to 446.2 MHz band at up to 0.5 W, and that carries Equipment Type Approval from the WPC wing of the Department of Telecommunications, needs no licence. Citizens band radio, on 26.957 to 27.283 MHz up to 5 W effective radiated power, is also exempt from licensing in India. Everything else, including the 400 to 470 MHz sets that flood online marketplaces, needs a government authorisation before you can even own it.

Expect to pay around ₹9,000 plus taxes and freight for one ETA-approved 446 MHz handheld from an Indian brand such as TalkPRO, whose LF446 is rated at 0.5 W maximum with a claimed 4 to 6 km of line of sight range and 16 channels. One radio per vehicle is the usual club practice, so a six-car run is a real purchase, not an impulse buy.

Why the cheap pair on a marketplace is the trap

On 16 January 2026 the Central Consumer Protection Authority acted against unauthorised walkie-talkie sales online. It identified more than 16,900 non-compliant listings, products sold without the mandatory details of operating frequency, licensing requirement and ETA status, and in many cases advertised as licence free or fully legal when they were not. Penalties of ₹10 lakh each went to Amazon Seller Services, Flipkart Internet and Meta Platforms, and ₹1 lakh each to four smaller sellers including JioMart and Talk Pro. Prasar Bharati's news service reported the authority's finding that many of these sets worked on restricted UHF bands used by police and emergency services.

For a buyer that matters in a specific way. The seller's page is not proof. Ask for the ETA number and the band printed on the radio, and check that the band reads 446.0 to 446.2 MHz. A set that can be tuned across 400 to 470 MHz is not licence free however it is described, and a forest or police check on a trail run is exactly where that becomes your problem.

Half a watt is half a watt. On an open Rann or a dry riverbed you will get usable range, but in a Western Ghats estate with trees and ridges between vehicles, plan on holding formation rather than spreading out. CB at 5 W behaves better in broken terrain and is the old overlanding standard, but it wants a properly mounted antenna and dash space, which is a build decision, not an accessory purchase.

If you want more power than that, the route is an authorisation rather than a purchase. The DoT's own service page for short range UHF hand held radio sets explains that the licence runs five years at a time, that documents include PAN or CIN and address and identity proof, and that fresh applications are now made through the authorisation portal under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 instead of the old Indian Telegraph Act route. That is worth it for a club that runs events, not for one weekend trip.

The cheapest honest answer is still a phone. Group calls and voice apps work fine until the signal drops, which on most good trails is at the gate. Radios are what keep a convoy close enough to stay on the marked line instead of fanning out across a meadow, and they let the lead car warn the tail about a washout before anyone drops into it.
