Which classic to buy for heritage rallies: the year cut-offs

Before you spend on a classic to campaign abroad, check the one number that decides everything: the build year, because London to Brighton stops at 1904, the 1000 Miglia at 1957, Goodwood Revival at 1966 and Le Mans Classic at 1984.

If you are buying a classic with the idea of running it on the world's big heritage events, start with the build year, not the badge. Every major run and historic race has a hard date window, and a car outside it cannot be bought into the field at any price.

The short answer. The RM Sotheby's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run takes only cars made before 1905, and each entry needs a Veteran Car Club of Great Britain dating certificate or passport. The 1000 Miglia works through the Registro 1000 Miglia, which certifies cars linked to the 24 races held between 1927 and 1957. Goodwood Revival covers racing from 1948 to 1966, and its Revival Car Show parking is for pre-1966 and tax exempt cars. Le Mans Classic splits its entry into six grids running from 1923 to 1984. Peter Auto's Tour Auto accepts cars that took part in or made their mark on the Tour de France Automobile between 1951 and 1984. The Vintage Sports-Car Club, in Britain, competes cars built before 1931, with cars before 1961 in certain cases, all of it checked through its Buff Form system.

What each window means for your shortlist

A pre-1905 car is a specialist purchase and a specialist search. You are not buying a car so much as buying a dated, documented one, because without the VCC paperwork the Brighton run is closed to you. The 2026 Run was held on 1 November, with registration having opened on 25 March 2026, so this is a plan made a year out.

The 1927 to 1957 band is the one most Indian collections can actually reach, because 1930s and 1950s saloons and sports cars still turn up here. The catch is that date alone is not enough. The Registro grades cars as Participant, for a car that ran a historic edition, Eligible Car, for a model that ran, and Guest List, for a car built before 1958 of an eligible type that never ran. Buy a 1955 car of a type that never entered and you are in the third queue, not the first.

The pre-1966 window is the widest practical one. A car of that era gets you Revival show parking, a Le Mans Classic grid and much of the Tour Auto list, which is why a well sorted 1950s or early 1960s car is the most useful single purchase if you want to travel.

The costs and trade-offs to price in

Entry is not a token fee. For the centenary 1000 Miglia on 24 to 29 May 2027, packages for a crew of two start at €16,500 net, with Silver at €19,500, Gold at €24,000 limited to 10 crews, a young driver package at €11,000 for crews where both are under 31, and Platinum at €75,000 with a guaranteed place.

Dates matter as much as money. Entries for 2027 opened on 6 October 2026 and close on 22 December 2026 at 4 pm CET, with acceptances sent by 15 March 2027. Shipping, insurance and a temporary import document for the car are on top, and none of it is refundable because your gearbox let go in April.

So the honest trade-off for an Indian buyer is this. The older the car, the smaller the entry list it unlocks but the better your odds of selection and the higher the prestige. The 1950s to 1960s car costs less to run, is easier to get parts for and opens more events, but you will be one of many applicants. Either way, buy the documentation with the car. On these events the file is worth as much as the paint.
