Where to off-road legally in South India, and what a day costs

Private ticketed tracks and club runs on private land are the only safe answer, and in Chennai a full day on an obstacle course with your own 4x4 is listed at ₹2,500.

If you have just bought a Thar, a Jimny or a Gurkha in Bengaluru, Kochi or Chennai, the first question is always the same. Where can I actually use low ratio without getting into trouble? The honest answer is a short list. Pay to use a private off-road track, or go out with a club that has the landowner's permission. Everything else, forest roads, estate trails you have not asked about, hill routes that a district collector has closed, is someone else's land or someone else's problem to clean up.

The cheapest legal start is a booked track session. Madras Offroad Academy, which runs a learning ground at Kelambakkam outside Chennai, lists its 4x4 obstacle course at ₹1,500 per vehicle for three hours, ₹2,000 for five hours and ₹2,500 for a full day from 8am to 7pm. Each slot includes meals, an extra person in the vehicle is ₹500, and the booking has to be paid at least 48 hours in advance.

Learn first, then book track time

Driving an obstacle course without being taught how to read it is how people bend steering arms and burn clutches. The same academy sells a 4x4 Level-1 course at ₹4,500 per person, four hours split into two hours of classroom and two hours of practical, run on Sundays in groups of ten, with a written exam and a certificate at the end. The syllabus covers off-road safety and care of the environment, driving position and spotting, tyre choice, basic transmission, differential and suspension theory, and advice on which modifications are worth buying. The academy says this course is mandatory before you can take its intermediate and advanced levels.

That order matters for your wallet. A day of track time costs less than one damaged CV joint, and a basic course costs less than most people spend on recovery gear in the first month of ownership.

The South Indian venue map

The 4x4tracks.in directory lists venues state by state, and it is the quickest way to find something near you. In Karnataka it lists Dirt Devils Adventures at Ramanagara as a 4x4 park of more than 50 acres, the Ramanagara Offroad Club's four acre track, DirtyDrivez near Bengaluru as a purpose-built obstacle track, and Mahindra's Bengaluru academy. In Tamil Nadu it lists Madras Offroad Academy with 23 custom obstacles, OffRoadTrackat37 at Coimbatore as a 1.4 km facility, and Mahindra's Chennai venue. For Kerala it lists 4BY4 DAYS at Thiruvananthapuram and R&T's Pulianmala track in Idukki. Treat the prices in any directory as a starting point and confirm on the phone, because the listed figures and the owner's current rate often differ.

Where not to drive, and why clubs care

Kerala shows what happens when off-roading spills onto public roads. In Marayoor, the district administration and police shut off-road safaris to Muruganmala on the collector's directive, and more than 300 jeep drivers who charged around ₹2,500 a ride for a five hour, 50 km tour of eight spots were left protesting. At Kaithappathal near Vagamon, an action committee has demanded a ban, with residents complaining of speeding jeeps, loud music affecting around 200 families and roads being chewed up.

So keep it simple. Book a track, join a club run where the organiser names the landowner, carry a tow strap and a spotter, and stay off beaches, forest paths and estate roads unless the owner has said yes. The scene in South India survives on that permission.
