If your child has outgrown birthday party karting and wants to race properly in India, the paperwork is simpler than the bills that follow it. Every FMSCI sanctioned kart race needs an FMSCI competition licence. On the federation's published schedule of fees, the row that matters for a racing child is "Karting Regular, Mini" at ₹2,500. To try a single weekend, a One Event licence is ₹250, Club Sport Karting is ₹350, and a Grassroot licence is ₹100 for one event or ₹300 for a year. The schedule sitting on the FMSCI portal is the 2024 version, so confirm the current rate on the portal before you pay.

How to get the licence

Applications go through the FMSCI licence portal, which asks you to pick from eSports, One Event, Club Sport/National/International, and the team entrant categories. Choose the Club Sport/National/International stream for a season licence and the One Event stream for a single race. The portal also lists bank details and a QR code for cases where the online payment fails.

One point parents miss. A child cannot enter a race in his or her own name. The global Rotax rulebook states that drivers who are still under age, and so do not have full legal capacity, cannot be their own entrant. A parent, guardian or team has to sign as the entrant. Tracks want the same thing in person, and MECO's karting course page notes that for anyone under 18 an indemnity has to be signed.

Which class, and which grade of licence

Age decides the class, and the class decides the grade of licence. The 2026 global Rotax regulations set 125 Micro MAX at 8 to 11 years, Mini MAX at 10 to 13, Junior MAX at 12 to 14 and Senior MAX from 14 upward, with DD2 from 15. The Indian national championship lists its own age bands, Micro 8 to 12, Mini 10 to 14, Junior 12 to 15 and Senior above 14.

Those classes also carry minimum weights for kart and driver together, which is why heavier children often run ballast-free and lighter ones carry lead. Rotax sets 105 kg for Micro MAX, 115 kg for Mini MAX, 145 kg for Junior MAX, 162 kg for Senior MAX and 175 kg for DD2.

A national licence is enough for Indian rounds. The moment your child is invited abroad, the grade goes up. Rotax asks for international Grade G for Mini MAX and Junior MAX, Grade F or E for Senior MAX, and Grade E for DD2 and the Masters classes. On the FMSCI fee schedule, the international karting licence is listed at ₹4,500 plus ₹810 GST, which is ₹5,310 in all.

Before the licence, and what the first real bill looks like

Start at a rental track, but check it against FMSCI's own leisure karting guidelines. Those call for a correctly sized full-face helmet with a visor, clothes that cover arms and legs, closed shoes, gloves, a disposable mobcap, rib protection and tied-back long hair. They also recommend a minimum track width of 7 m for fast tracks and 5 m for others, and say tracks where karts exceed 90 km/h must be designed for it.

The step from there to a race kart is where money appears. MECO runs a two-day course at MECO Kartopia in Bengaluru, 9 am to 6 pm, on Rotax Max karts with Sodi chassis, in Micro, Junior and Senior groups. The fee is ₹70,800 including GST, and that covers track time, kart, mechanic, fuel, oils, tyres and instructors, but not travel or stay.

The 2026 national season ran six rounds from June to October, at CoASTT in Coimbatore, Mika in Chennai and MECO Kartopia in Bengaluru. The prize at the top is worth knowing early. Rotax says it and its distributors cover the karts, engines, tyres, petrol and entry fee for drivers who qualify for the Grand Finals, with national class winners nominated in writing by Rotax.
