If you have watched Hero MotoSports at the Dakar and wondered what it takes to line up on a rally raid yourself, the first honest answer is an entry fee. Baja Aragón in Spain, a round of the FIM Bajas World Cup and the FIA World Baja Cup, published its 2026 numbers. A bike or quad entry cost €1,295 with organiser advertising carried on the machine. A car entry in the FIA classes cost €3,900, and a truck the same. Those are entry fees alone, before the vehicle, the freight, the flights and the service crew.

What the entry fee buys, and what it does not

Refusing the organiser's advertising is allowed and it is expensive. Baja Aragón's car page lists a 60 per cent surcharge for running clean, which takes the FIA car entry to €6,240 and a Spanish Group T8 or Regularity entry from €1,550 to €2,480. On bikes the no advertising figure was €2,600 against €1,295.

For bikes and quads, the fee includes the GPS and the Stella tracking unit, which is how the organiser follows and finds you. Service is charged separately. An extra space in the assistance park was listed at €24.20 and a supplementary assistance plate, which is what a second service vehicle needs, at €500. Entry is by the official registration form with payment by bank transfer to the organiser's CaixaBank account. If you want your result to count for the FIA World or European Cup, you also have to register on the FIA system at registrations.fia.com/bajas by the deadline of the season's first event.

Where an Indian competitor builds the skills

There is no W2RC round in India, so the practice has to come from Indian off-road events and training. Mahindra Adventure lists two one day courses at its Chennai facility, 4x4 Fundamentals starting at ₹3,500 and the intermediate Getting Dirty day starting at ₹7,500, both run as off-road driver training with certification. The 2 night Sand Survivor programme at Jaisalmer starts at ₹40,000 and was shown as sold out when we checked, and Jaisalmer sand is the closest thing in India to what a baja asks of you.

That is the ladder in plain terms. Learn vehicle control and recovery on a training day, do Indian cross country and off-road events for seat time, then budget a foreign baja as your first points scoring start. For a sense of the level at the top of this sport, Hero MotoSports Team Rally closed the 2026 Rallye du Maroc with six podiums and a stage win, with both riders inside the top ten overall.

The calendar to plan around

Baja Aragón ran its 42nd edition from 11 to 13 September 2026 and has announced 10 to 12 September for 2027, with classes for bikes and quads, cars, trucks, a Trail category for 600cc to 950cc and bigger machines, and ParaBaja for competitors with impaired mobility.

The 2027 FIA and FIM World Rally-Raid Championship has five rounds. The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge runs from 21 to 26 March, the South African Safari Rally from 14 to 19 June, bp Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal from 21 to 26 September and Rallye OLA Energie du Maroc from 24 to 29 October. The Dakar opens the season. Its 49th edition has moved to Portugal and Morocco, running from 9 to 23 January 2027 with a prologue and 12 stages from Loulé-Faro to Marrakech, and more than 350 entries already confirmed.
