The short answer: the cheapest legitimate way to armour and load a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is the company's own Genuine Motorcycle Accessories list, where a set of large engine guards is ₹4,750, the rally protection kit with engine guards and a metal sump guard together is ₹9,950, and a radiator guard is ₹1,950. Luggage is where the money goes. Pannier rails are ₹3,950, the panniers themselves are ₹32,950, a top box mount is ₹2,450 and the top box, which includes a padded pillion backrest, is ₹23,250. Waterproof inner bags for the panniers are ₹2,750 a pair.

Buy protection in this order

Start underneath. The rally protection kit at ₹9,950 bundles the engine guards with a metal sump guard, which makes more sense than buying the ₹4,750 guards alone if the bike will see dirt. Next is the radiator guard at ₹1,950, the cheapest part on the list and the one protecting the most expensive thing to fix on a liquid-cooled single. A headlight grille is ₹3,950 and a touring screen ₹3,450. Royal Enfield's published list does not price hand guards separately, so most owners buy those aftermarket.

If you want imported hardware, SW-MOTECH's crash bars for the Himalayan 450 are 27 mm steel tube with a black powder coat, weigh about 4.3 kg and bolt onto factory mounting points on the frame with no frame modification, listed at €180 including VAT on the company's own site. Its US price list puts the same crash bars at $240, the 4 mm aluminium alloy skid plate at $280 in silver and $310 in black, handguards at $155 and axle crash pads at $90. Those are overseas numbers. An Indian seller has to add duty and GST on top, so ask for the landed price in writing before you order.

Racks first, boxes later

Indian brands cover the rack side at a fraction of hard luggage money. Auto Engina lists a rally saddle stay from ₹3,699, a rally top rack from ₹3,999 and the two together from ₹6,999, with a Tour Plus rack plate at ₹3,299. An adjustable GPS mount is from ₹2,199 and a universal fog light mounts set is from ₹1,499.

The practical sequence is stays and racks first, then decide between soft and hard. A saddle stay plus dry bags gets you touring for a few thousand rupees. Aluminium panniers can wait until you know you actually ride loaded.

The bit owners skip: Section 52

Crash protection is not legally neutral in India. In December 2017 the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways wrote to state transport authorities saying the fitment of crash guards and bull bars contravenes Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and attracts penalty under Sections 190 and 191. The reported penalties are ₹1,000 for a driver's first offence, ₹2,000 for a subsequent one and up to ₹5,000 for the seller or fitter. A stay on that advisory was vacated on 2 December 2019, and on 4 May 2023 a Delhi High Court bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela directed authorities to take strict action against unauthorised fitting of crash guards or bull bars on vehicles.

The arguments made in court were about cars, pedestrian injuries and airbag deployment. The advisory itself is worded about vehicles. So do not assume a motorcycle crash bar is untouchable. Fitting parts from the manufacturer's own accessory catalogue at an authorised dealer, and keeping the invoice, is the route with the least to argue about later.
