What an FIA circuit grade means, and which grade each Indian racetrack holds
A plain explainer on how the FIA grades racetracks, why Buddh is Grade 1 and Kari is Grade 4, and what that does and does not mean for your track day.

MotorsportThe short answer
An FIA circuit grade is a safety licence. It says what kind of racing car is allowed to compete at that venue, and nothing else. The grades run 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, with a separate Grade FE for Formula E venues and an entry level Grade 5 added for countries that are still building their first proper circuits. The sorting is done mainly on how quick the cars are, expressed as a weight to power ratio. Grade 1 covers international formula cars under 1 kg/hp and is the only grade that can host a Formula 1 race. Grade 2 covers cars between 1 and 2 kg/hp. Grade 3 covers 2 to 3 kg/hp. Grade 6 is for autocross, rallycross and ice racing.
In India the picture is short enough to list. The Buddh International Circuit at Greater Noida holds Grade 1, the only Indian venue at the top step. The Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai holds Grade 2, licensed in 2014, and runs a 3.717 km full layout of 17 turns plus a 2.067 km short circuit of 9 turns, both about 11 metres wide. Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, inaugurated in 2003, holds Grade 4 over 2.1 km and 15 turns, which is why it hosts karting, bike racing and the junior formula classes rather than anything quicker. The newer CoASTT High Performance Centre, also near Coimbatore, says its 3.8 km main circuit is built to FIA grade and international safety standards, and it can be split into two shorter tracks for two events at once. The Valley Speedway near Chitradurga was designed by Tilke Engineers and Architects and targets Grade 3, the same target as Nanoli Speedway outside Pune.

How a track earns its grade
The FIA does not simply measure the tarmac after it is laid. The drawing of a new circuit is studied through simulation, including the trajectory of each corner, the braking zones and whether the impact absorbing barriers meet FIA standards. An inspector is assigned to follow construction, and a thorough verification of the track's safety level is done before any licence is issued. That is why grades are quoted as targets while a track is still being built, and only become facts once the paperwork lands.
Grade 5 exists because this process is expensive. The FIA calls it the entry level step into circuit homologation, meant for emerging motorsport nations with limited infrastructure and money. The application asks for fewer documents and only a basic safety simulation study, fees are kept low enough to cover administration, and inspections are grouped regionally so one trip covers several venues. It does not allow international competition, but it puts a circuit inside the system and gives it a path upward. Grade FE arrived at the end of 2024 for Formula E rounds, which are usually run on temporary layouts rather than permanent circuits.

What the grade does not decide
A grade says nothing about whether you can take your own car or bike out there. That is the venue's business. Kari Motor Speedway's own booking page lists open track day slots on the main circuit starting at ₹5,000 per slot and joy drive slots on the kart circuit starting at ₹550. The rules there are the usual ones, a government photo ID at registration, a signed indemnity, a compulsory 10 minute safety briefing, arrival 30 minutes early and a helmet that meets the track's standard. Top Gear India has reported full day exclusive rentals of roughly ₹1 lakh at Madras, ₹1.5 lakh at Kari and ₹14 lakh at Buddh, so club track days are the sensible route for an individual owner.
Read a lower grade for what it is. Grade 4 does not mean a track is unsafe, it means the licence covers slower cars than Grade 2 does. For a rider on a 390 or an owner with a hot hatch, the run-off, the marshal posts and the ambulance on standby matter far more than the number on the certificate.

Didn't know Kari was only Grade 4, always assumed it was higher given how long it's been hosting races. Explains why bigger formula stuff never happens there. Curious if CoASTT's actual grade has been confirmed yet or is it still just "built to FIA standard" on paper.
