What ADAS calibration after a windscreen change costs in India, and how to get it done right

If your car has a camera behind the rear-view mirror, a new windscreen means the camera has to be recalibrated, and Indian glass fitters quote ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 for that job on top of the glass.

Short answer first. If your car has Level 2 driver assistance, the forward camera is almost certainly stuck to the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror. Change that glass and the camera's aim changes with it, so it has to be recalibrated before lane keep assist, adaptive cruise and automatic emergency braking can be trusted again. AIS Windshield Experts, the service arm of India's biggest car glass maker, says ADAS calibration after a windscreen replacement in India usually costs ₹3,500 to ₹8,000, with the final figure depending on the model, how complex the system is and whether static or dynamic calibration is needed.

What is sitting behind that piece of glass

AIS lists the forward-facing camera near the rear-view mirror, the rain and light sensor and parking sensors among the hardware mounted on or around an ADAS windscreen, and says that when such a windscreen is replaced, recalibration is typically required, by static or dynamic methods and by trained people. This is no longer a luxury-car problem. The Maruti Victoris, a mass-market SUV, is sold with what Maruti calls an advanced Level 2 ADAS system with 10 plus features, including automatic emergency brake, adaptive cruise control with curve speed reduction and lane keep assist.

The UK's Thatcham Research, which writes the insurance industry rules for ADAS repair there, puts the principle bluntly: if ADAS sensors, or parts close to them, are part of a repair, calibration afterwards must confirm the sensors work to the carmaker's specified tolerances. That logic covers more than glass. A bumper or grille repair can disturb a radar, and suspension or wheel alignment work changes the attitude of the whole car.

The steps to insist on

  1. Check whether your car has a camera pod behind the mirror. If it does, tell the glass fitter at the time of booking, not after the old screen is out.
  2. Ask for glass with the correct camera bracket for your model, not a generic screen.
  3. Ask which calibration your car needs. AIS describes static calibration as an indoor job with printed targets and measuring tools while the car stands still, and dynamic calibration as a drive along a defined route so the system can settle. Some cars need both.
  4. Ask for a scan before and after. The AIS process starts with reading camera status and fault codes and ends with a second scan to confirm the result.
  5. Let the adhesive cure before the car is driven for a dynamic calibration.
  6. Ask for the recalibration certificate. AIS says these are given on request.
  7. On your first drive, switch the features on and check they engage. In the IIHS survey of nearly 500 American owners, about two-thirds of those whose crash avoidance repair involved a windscreen replacement reported problems with the technology afterwards, which suggests calibration is where these jobs go wrong.

Insurance, and why the bill looks bigger than it used to

AIS Windshield Experts says calibration may be paid by the insurer when it is treated as a necessary part of the windscreen claim, which needs own-damage or glass cover, so get calibration written into the estimate and the claim before work is approved, use a cashless network garage with pre-approval, and keep the invoice, the calibration report and the deductible paperwork. For scale, AAA's December 2023 teardown of repair estimates on three 2023 model year vehicles, a Ford F-150, a Nissan Rogue and a Toyota Camry, found ADAS parts and calibration made up 25.4 per cent of a windscreen replacement bill, an average of 360 dollars.

Thatcham noted that more than 10 per cent of cars on UK roads already had autonomous emergency braking, around 4 million cars. India is heading the same way, which means a cracked windscreen is now a sensor job as much as a glass job.
