If you drive a 4x4 into places where an ambulance cannot reach you, the honest answer is that you need two things: a basic certified first-aid card, and a wilderness course that teaches you what to do when help is hours away instead of minutes.

The cheap tier is the Indian Red Cross. Haryana's state branch charges ₹300 including GST for first-aid training, with online registration, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes of video to be completed within three days and up to five attempts at the assessment. Karnataka's branch runs a proper classroom course instead: ₹1,000 per candidate, 16 hours of teaching spread over three days for companies or eight sessions of two hours each for individuals, with batches capped at 30. The syllabus is CPR, bleeding control, fractures, burns and medical emergencies such as heart attack and stroke. The certificate comes from Red Cross national headquarters in Delhi, and Karnataka warns it takes 5 to 6 months after the exam.

The wilderness tier, and why it is different

A city first-aid card assumes an ambulance. On a Spiti track or a Coorg estate trail, you are the ambulance. NOLS Wilderness Medicine, one of the oldest names in this field, describes its Wilderness First Aid course as 16 hours over two to two and a half days, built around a Patient Assessment System and around evacuation decision making, aimed at trips that are still relatively close to medical resources. NOLS lists it at $200 to $450 in the US.

In India, the Hanifl Centre at Woodstock School in Landour, Mussoorie, runs the same family of courses with Aerie Backcountry Medicine of the US, following Wilderness Medical Society and American Heart Association guidelines. Wilderness First Aid is 2½ days and 20 hours, which is 16 hours of WFA plus 4 hours of CPR, for ₹7,500 including 5 per cent GST. Half of it is classroom, half is practical scenarios, running 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, with a cap of 30 participants to two instructors and a minimum age of 16.

Wilderness Advanced First Aid is the step up: 4 days and 32 hours, 28 hours of WAFA plus 4 hours of CPR, for ₹12,000 including GST, with full patient assessment and extended patient care. Both courses issue WFA or WAFA, CPR and epinephrine auto-injector certificates, each valid for two years. Both fee quotes on the Hanifl pages are marked valid till March 2026, so confirm the current number before you transfer money.

How to book, and what to do first

For the Red Cross, go through your state branch, not the national site. Karnataka asks for a request letter from your company or institution, at least 10 days of notice before the training date, two passport photographs, an Aadhaar copy and contact details. Haryana wants online registration at least two days before an offline session. Fees and formats differ by state, so ask your own branch.

For Hanifl, book directly with the centre and plan the travel, because a 4 day course in Mussoorie is a trip in itself.

One practical rule for convoys: get at least one person per vehicle trained, not just the trip leader. Your kit is useless if the only trained hand is the casualty.

Know the numbers before you lose signal

Training is half of it. Save the escalation path offline. In Uttarakhand, the state emergency operations centre is 1070, district centres are 1077, and 112 covers police, fire, ambulance and disaster response. USDMA also points travellers to the Sachet, Damini, Bhudev and Mausam apps, and to the state PWD road closure page before you set off. Write those numbers on paper and tape them inside the glovebox lid.
