What a strong hybrid's battery warranty covers in India, and what the pack still needs

Maruti and Toyota both cover the lithium-ion pack for 8 years or 1,60,000 km, longer than the rest of the car is covered, and the one job left to the owner is keeping its cooling air clean.

The short answer first. If you bought a Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Invicto or Camry strong hybrid in India, the lithium-ion traction battery is covered for 8 years or 1,60,000 km, whichever comes first. Maruti stated that cover in its Grand Vitara launch release in September 2022, as a "standard warranty of 8 years/160,000 km on the Li-ion battery pack". Toyota Kirloskar Motor moved to the same terms from 1 August 2021, up from 3 years or 1,00,000 km, and its hybrid technology page still lists the 8-year or 1,60,000 km battery warranty for the Hyryder and the Hycross.

The battery is covered longer than the car

This is the part owners miss. The pack warranty runs separately from the vehicle warranty, and it runs longer.

Maruti's standard factory warranty, enhanced in July 2024, is 3 years or 1,00,000 km on the engine, transmission, mechanical parts, electricals and air conditioning, with consumables left out. You can extend it with the Platinum package to the 4th year or 1,20,000 km, Royal Platinum to the 5th year or 1,40,000 km, and Solitaire to the 6th year or 1,60,000 km.

So in year 7 of a Grand Vitara hybrid, the thing people worry about most is still the only thing under warranty. Do not confuse that with a maintenance plan. Maruti's Smart Maintenance Plan, rolled out on 15 June 2026, buys you periodic service labour, service parts and consumables for 2 years or 20,000 km up to 10 years or 1 lakh km, and it says plainly that repairs arising from manufacturing or component failure are not covered by it, because warranty handles those.

The one job that is actually yours

Toyota's India site says the electric motor and battery components in a self-charging hybrid "do not require maintenance". That is true of the pack itself. It is not true of the air that cools it.

A Toyota-Suzuki strong hybrid cools its pack with cabin air drawn through a vent, usually low down near the rear seat. Toyota's hybrid owner's manual text tells you to visually inspect that air intake vent periodically for clogs, because a blocked vent hurts fuel economy, and to clean it if the car displays "Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts". The method matters. Use a vacuum cleaner. Do not use water or other liquids, because water reaching the traction battery can cause a malfunction or fire. Do not use an air blow gun either, because blowing dust further in can cause a malfunction or restrict the pack's output.

Practical steps, in order. Pull the rear floor mat back and look at the vent every couple of months, more often after a dusty highway run. Vacuum it dry. Keep bags, mats and loose seat covers off it. Ask your service advisor to show you the cooling filter at each service and to record that it was checked, so there is a paper trail if you ever claim. If the dash asks for traction battery cooling maintenance, treat it as urgent, not cosmetic.

What a replacement would cost

No Indian maker has published a pack price. Autocar India's advice column puts a full pack replacement at roughly ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh in today's terms, while noting Toyota hybrids globally run well past 10 years on the original battery. Toyota cites an iCAT study saying its hybrids cover 40 per cent of distance and 60 per cent of time with the engine off, which is also why Maruti claims 27.97 km/l for the Grand Vitara hybrid. That duty cycle leans on the pack daily, which is the best argument for spending five minutes with a vacuum cleaner.
