4×4, Desert & OverlandThe short answer first. You can drive yourself to the edge of the White Rann at Dhordo, the official Rann Utsav booking site lists the 2026-27 season as 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, and the vehicle itself is free to take in. The Gujarat government's White Rann permit portal lists ₹100 for an adult above 12 years, ₹50 for a child of 6 to 12 years, free entry for children up to 5 years, and ₹0 for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The main traveller has to upload an ID proof, and the portal states it is for Indian nationals only.

The drive, and why you do not need a 4x4
Bhuj is the base. Gujarat Tourism's Great Rann of Kutch page puts the Rann about 85 km from Bhuj and gives the viewing hours as dawn to dusk. That last leg is a normal road drive. The Tent City runs its own coaches over the same route from Bhuj railway station and airport, with pickups listed at 8:15 am, 10 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm, which tells you plenty about how ordinary the road is. A front-wheel-drive hatchback will do it.
If you want the drive to be the holiday, string Dholavira into the same trip. Gujarat Tourism puts Ahmedabad to Dholavira at 335 km and roughly 7 hours, and Bhuj to Dholavira at 250 km and about 5.5 hours via Bhachau and Rapar. The state bus leaves Bhuj at 2 pm and reaches Dholavira at 8:30 pm, so budget your own run generously and start early. Tickets for the Harappan site are booked through the Archaeological Survey of India's online payment link.
What the stay costs
Rann Utsav's booking site lists starting rates of ₹6,300 for one night and two days, ₹12,600 for two nights and three days, and ₹18,900 for three nights and four days. Those are entry prices and the site says the final cost varies by tent type and season, so a full moon weekend in a Darbari Suite is a different number altogether. Six grades are listed, from Non-AC Swiss Cottage up through Premium and Super Premium tents to the Rajwadi and Darbari suites. Food is included in the package, with breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner.
One warning on dates. When we checked on 1 November 2026, Gujarat Tourism's own Rann Utsav festival page still carried the previous season's dates, 23 November 2025 to 20 February 2026. Book off the Tent City site, not off the festival page.
Where the driving stops
The salt does not belong to you. The flat sits inside the Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, which Gujarat Tourism records as declared in February 1986 and covering 7,506.22 sq km, the largest sanctuary in the state. Park where you are directed, walk out, and treat any track heading further into the Rann as off limits unless an authority has told you otherwise. A set of tyre marks across a salt crust lasts for months and is exactly the kind of thing that gets access closed for everyone.
Two more practical bits before you leave. Gujarat Tourism's news and updates page, last refreshed on 28 October 2026, is where the live links sit: the permit portal, the Dhordo helicopter joyride operator and the state's online liquor permit, which matters because Gujarat is dry. Get the permit done at home on your phone rather than in a queue at the gate, and carry the same ID you uploaded.
