What a factory off-road driving course in India costs, and what each level teaches

Mahindra's Off-Road Academy starts at ₹3,500 for an afternoon in your own 4x4 and goes up to ₹40,000 for three days on the Jaisalmer dunes, and the ladder from one to the other is built in a fixed order.

If you own a 4x4 in India and want to be taught properly rather than learn by breaking things, the cheapest formal start is about ₹3,500. That is what Mahindra charges a driver who brings his own 4x4 Mahindra SUV to the 4x4 Fundamentals course at the Mahindra SUV Proving Track in Chennai, listed for 21 November 2026 as a single afternoon from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm, with roughly two hours of actual off-road time. The fee rises with the number of people you put in the car.

Mahindra's Off-Road Driver Training Academy runs five named levels. Getting Dirty, or 4x4 Fundamentals, is the beginner day course held at Chennai, Delhi and Igatpuri. Trail Survivor is the intermediate overnight step, with deeper theory on vehicle dynamics, tougher obstacles and night driving, and the academy says it needs no prerequisites. Desert Survivor, listed as Sand Survivor for the Jaisalmer dates, teaches throttle control, gear selection, steering and recovery in sand. Snow Survivor is a seasonal course in Leh on Thars. Global Explorer is the top rung, three days of advanced driving and recovery plus basic vehicle repairs and first aid, ending in a skill test, and you must have finished Trail Survivor before you can book it.

What the money actually buys

The gap between a beginner day and a residential course is mostly food, beds and vehicles. Trail Survivor at Igatpuri, listed for 1 to 2 August 2026, is ₹23,000 for a driver and ₹30,000 with a co-passenger, and that covers hotel stay, meals, trackside snacks, recovery training, a campsite setup masterclass, certification and merchandise. You drive Mahindra Adventure training vehicles on a sharing basis, so your own car stays clean. Day two includes building a log bridge and a friendly competition, and the page says top finishers get a 50 per cent discount towards the next programme.

Sand Survivor in Jaisalmer, listed for 4 to 6 December 2026, is ₹40,000 for a driver and ₹50,000 with a co-passenger, across three days. Thars are the training vehicles, accommodation is on a sharing basis and all meals are included. Day one reporting is at 1:00 pm, trails start at 5:00 pm, dune sessions run from 10:00 am on day two and certification is at 4:30 pm, with departure the next morning. For most owners that is the single most useful course in the list, because sand is where bad throttle habits and wrong tyre pressures actually strand you.

The other factory programmes

Toyota Kirloskar Motor's Great 4x4 X-Pedition works differently. It is an organised convoy drive rather than a classroom, with a listed fee of ₹20,000 per participant, and the completed editions ran at Sakleshpur, Lonavala, Hoshiarpur, Purulia and Guwahati with 14 to 26 SUVs each and Hilux, Fortuner, Land Cruiser 300 and Hyryder in the mix. You bring your own vehicle and the obstacles are set up on private or permitted ground.

Land Rover's Experience Drives in India are structured as a one hour taster, a half day, then a full day, with an advanced level after that, plus a Young Off-Roader session for ages 11 to 17. Prices are not published on the site, so you have to ask a retailer. Force Motors runs Gurkha Trails for owners, with the second western edition held at Wangani village near Velhe in Pune for 68 participants and 22 Gurkhas, but it does not publish a dated calendar with fees.

Booking sense

Two things matter before you pay. First, check whether the course needs your car or supplies one, because the Chennai fundamentals day needs a Mahindra 4x4 and the residential courses do not. Second, work backwards from the level you want. If Global Explorer or a Leh snow course is the goal, Trail Survivor is the gate, and those dates fill in a fixed season.
