VinFast India Crosses 14,637 EVs in 14 Months, Ranks No. 4 in Electric Cars, But Over Half Were Fleet Taxis

Figures reported on 16 October 2026 put VinFast fourth in India's electric passenger vehicle market on a 4% share, but 54% of its first-half volume was fleet taxis, and retails trailed wholesales by about 2,100 units.

VinFast Auto India has sold 14,637 electric vehicles in India between 6 September 2025 and 14 October 2026, according to figures reported by Autocar Professional on 16 October 2026. That is enough to make the Vietnamese newcomer the fourth-largest electric passenger vehicle seller in the country for the first half of FY2027, ahead of Maruti Suzuki, BYD India and Tesla India, with the last of those managing just 1,126 units in the same six months.

On a 4% share of the 343,876 e-PVs sold in H1 FY2027, VinFast now sits behind only Tata Motors, Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India. For a brand that had no Indian showroom two years ago and builds at a single assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, that is a genuinely fast climb. The detail underneath the rank is where it gets more interesting.

Retail is running behind production

The same set of numbers shows H1 FY2027 production at 14,116 units, wholesales at 13,307 and retail sales at 11,172. Wholesales are what a carmaker invoices to dealers. Retails are what customers actually registered. A gap of roughly 2,100 units between the two in six months means stock is sitting in the channel, not in driveways. For buyers, that usually means discounting pressure and older manufacture dates on cars in showrooms, worth checking the VIN year before you sign.

The model split is the bigger caveat. The Limo Green, the fleet-specification version of VinFast's seven-seat electric MPV, sold through its GSM sub-brand, accounted for about 7,000 units, or 54% of H1 volume. The retail-spec VF MPV 7 added only about 530 units (4%). So more than half of VinFast's Indian business is taxi and fleet supply, with a de-tuned feature set and a speed governor capped at 80kph, as CarWale reported when the MPV launched on 15 April 2026 at Rs 24.49 lakh.

Strip out the fleet channel and the consumer story is smaller: the VF7 did 3,519 units (26%) and the VF6 2,076 units (16%). That is a credible but modest private-buyer base, roughly 5,600 cars in six months, against an Indian e-car market that registered 36,010 units in September 2026 alone, when EVs took 8.5% of passenger car and cab registrations, per EVreporter's Vahan-based tracker. Tata alone held 41% of that month.

What the VF6 and VF7 actually offer

The VF6 is priced at Rs 18.19 to 20.09 lakh with a 59.6kWh pack, 177hp or 204hp, and a claimed 463 to 480km. The VF7 runs Rs 22.99 to 28.09 lakh with 59.6kWh or 70kWh, up to 532km claimed and 5.8sec to 100kph on the bigger battery. Both carry 5-star Bharat NCAP ratings, which is the strongest objective point in VinFast's favour, those claimed ranges are lab figures and should be read with the usual 25 to 30% real-world haircut in city-plus-highway use.

For Bengaluru readers, VinFast's 50th Indian outlet was a 3S facility on Hosur Road in Electronic City, opened in March 2026 by PPS Motors. The company was then targeting 75 dealerships and 230 workshops by the end of 2026, up from 130 workshops. With over half of volumes going to fleets, service throughput, not showroom count, is the number to watch before buying one.
