Uttarakhand SDRF becomes India's first ISO 9001:2015 certified disaster response force, certificate issued 8 October 2026
The Bureau of Indian Standards certified the Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force's quality management system on 8 October 2026, after a three day audit at its Jolly Grant headquarters, which means the force that pulls stranded vehicles and trekkers off hill roads now runs to an audited standar

Mahindra Scorpio-NIf you drive a 4x4 in Uttarakhand, the State Disaster Response Force is the agency that turns up when things go badly wrong. A vehicle off the edge below Chamoli, a group cut off by a landslide on the Gangotri road, a cloudburst that takes out the only bridge back. On 8 October 2026 that force was awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards, making it the first disaster response force in the country to hold it, according to The Tribune and ETV Bharat.
The certificate followed a second audit at the SDRF battalion headquarters at Jolly Grant from 23 to 25 September 2026. It was led by Vishnu Gupta, former Scientist 'G' and Deputy Director General at BIS. The audit looked at administrative systems, personnel training, resource management, documentation, quality management and compliance with standard operating procedures. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the certification reflects the force's operational efficiency, discipline and commitment to quality in disaster management.

What an ISO stamp actually changes
ISO 9001 is not a rescue capability rating. It is a quality management standard, which means someone outside the organisation has checked that the organisation writes down what it does, does what it writes down, and has a method for finding and fixing gaps. For a rescue force that matters in dull, useful ways. Kit logs get maintained. Training records get maintained. Rope, boat and medical inventory gets audited rather than assumed. The force covers earthquakes, landslides, extreme rainfall, cloudbursts, floods, avalanches and road accidents, and more than 40 teams sit on 24x7 standby across the state, so the paperwork has real consequences.
For the off-road community, the road accident part is the line to read twice. Most of us will never be in a flash flood. Plenty of us drive hill roads in monsoon and winter with no cell signal, poor shoulder support and no second vehicle. The people who come for you are the same teams that work the Char Dham yatra routes.
Numbers to save before you leave the plains
The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority publishes the control room numbers. Programme them into every phone in the convoy and write them on tape inside the glovebox, because a dead phone with a saved contact is no help to the person borrowing a handset from a shopkeeper.

The State Emergency Operation Centre runs on 1070, district control rooms on 1077, and 112 reaches police, fire, ambulance and disaster response. USDMA also lists SEOC landlines 0135-2710334, 2710335, 2664314, 2664315 and 2664316.
What this does not fix
A certified response force still cannot reach a vehicle faster than the terrain allows. In Garhwal and Kumaon a team can be hours away even when it leaves immediately, and a blocked road stops a rescue truck exactly the way it stopped you. That is the argument for the basics this desk keeps repeating. Travel in two vehicles where you can. Carry a recovery kit you have actually practised with, not one bought the week before the trip. Leave a route plan and a check-in time with someone at home. Know your own first-aid limits.
The certificate is good news. It raises the floor on how an Indian state rescue force is run. It does nothing for how prepared your own vehicle is.
