Tata Steel has switched on the cold rolling end of its Kalinganagar works in Odisha. Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the new facilities on 14 October 2026, according to UNI, covering two continuous galvanising lines with a combined 1 million tonnes a year of capacity, a 0.9 million tonne continuous annealing line, Phase 1 of a 7 million tonne slurry pipeline and an air separation unit built by Linde India. The cumulative investment across the Kalinganagar and Neelachal Ispat Nigam projects is ₹9,067 crore, and the company expects 10,500 direct and indirect jobs from them.

The important part for the car industry is what those two galvanising lines are for. Tata Steel says they will let it make advanced automotive steel, including coated advanced high strength steels, for automobile and appliance makers. Orissa Diary reports the lines use third-generation technology meant for automotive-grade coated AHSS. The annealing line is not new to production, the plant despatched its first annealed coils from it in February 2025, but it is now formally part of the commissioned complex, and Tata Steel calls it one of the top three benchmark automotive lines in the world.

Why a continuous annealing line matters

Cold rolling work-hardens steel and leaves it brittle, so it has to be annealed before a press shop can touch it. A batch anneal cooks coils slowly in bell furnaces over days, which is cheap but gives you variation from the outside of the coil to the inside. A continuous annealing line unwinds the strip and runs it through heating, soaking, rapid cooling and overaging zones at a controlled speed, so every metre sees the same thermal cycle. That repeatability is what lets a mill hit the tight yield strength and elongation windows that dual phase, complex phase and quenching and partitioning grades need.

Galvanising on top of that is the harder trick. Carmakers want the crash strength of AHSS and the corrosion life of a zinc coat on the same panel, and the two fight each other: higher strength grades are fussier about coating adhesion, and zinc coatings on high strength steel bring their own spot welding problems. The equipment for all three lines came from CMI, now part of John Cockerill, which has said the order covered two galvanising lines and one annealing line and was aimed at skin panels for automotive outer bodies.

What it means for Indian carmakers

India's body-in-white steel for crash structures has leaned on a narrow set of suppliers, and coated AHSS in particular. A second domestic source of one million tonnes a year of coated capacity, sitting next to Kalinganagar's own hot strip supply, shortens the chain between a mill and a press shop in Pune, Sanand or Chennai. It also matters for Bharat NCAP ambitions, since side pole and offset barrier performance depends on the grade of the B-pillar reinforcement and front rails as much as on airbag count.

Tata Steel has also started modernising NINL in Jajpur district. Angel One reports a separately approved capital expenditure of ₹33,873 crore to add 4.8 million tonnes a year of crude steelmaking capacity there, with blast furnace fume extraction and zero effluent discharge in the scope.

Good to see domestic AHSS capacity going up but does this actually bring prices down for us or just helps Tata Motors source locally first. My Brezza already has decent HSS content per the brochure, curious if Maruti even sources from Tata Steel or sticks with its usual suppliers.
