Should you buy a BYD in India? What the 2,500-unit cap means

BYD's Indian range starts at about ₹25 lakh and runs to ₹54.9 lakh, but two of its four models still arrive as fully built imports under a 2,500-unit exemption, which decides your price, your wait and your service reach.

Should you buy a BYD in India? What the 2,500-unit cap meansBYD Atto 3

The short answer

Buy a BYD for the hardware, not for the convenience. The cars are strong on paper. The entry Sealion 7 Dynamic, launched in August 2026, costs ₹41.90 lakh ex-showroom with a 71.8 kWh Blade battery and a claimed 520 km on the NEDC cycle. What you accept in return is a brand that still imports or kit-assembles everything it sells here, works under an annual import ceiling, and had 47 outlets across 40 cities as of January 2026.

BYD sells four models in India: the Atto 3 from about ₹25 lakh, the eMax 7, the Seal and the Sealion 7. The Atto 3 and eMax 7 are put together locally from kits and are homologated, so they sit outside the import quota. The Seal and the Sealion 7 come in fully built at 70 per cent duty, using the rule that lets a maker bring in up to 2,500 vehicles a year without full Indian homologation. In 2025 the Sealion 7 alone used about 2,200 of those slots.

The cap is why prices move and waiting lists form

A capped pipeline means the seller sets the terms. BYD raised the Sealion 7 Premium from ₹48.9 lakh to ₹49.4 lakh from 1 January 2026, holding old prices only for bookings made on or before 31 December 2025. The Performance stayed at ₹54.9 lakh. If you book, get the price protection and the delivery window in writing on the booking form.

The bigger variable is assembly. BYD is evaluating semi-knocked-down assembly in India, which would cut the tariff on those models from 70 per cent to about 30 per cent and give it room on price and volume. India rejected BYD's $1 billion plant proposal in 2023 on security grounds, and no SKD start date has been announced. So waiting could save money, with no date to plan around.

Read the range figure and the warranty text

BYD quotes 567 km NEDC for the 82.56 kWh Sealion 7. Autocar India lists the claimed range for the same Premium variant as 482 km, and the 530 hp Performance at 456 km. NEDC is the kindest cycle in use, so treat it as a showroom number and plan highway stops on the lower figure.

The chemistry is in your favour. BYD's own account of its nail penetration test says the Blade pack neither smoked nor caught fire, with surface temperature at 30 to 60 degrees C, while a ternary lithium cell in the same test went past 500 degrees C and burned. An LFP pack is also happy being charged to full, which suits Indian apartment charging on the 7 kW home charger BYD bundles with free installation. The Dynamic's ownership package also lists 10 years roadside assistance and a 10 year or 1,50,000 km warranty on the low voltage LFP battery.

Service reach and resale are the real trade-off

BYD registered 735 electric cars in October 2026 for a 2 per cent share of a 35,777-unit month. That is a tenth of what Hyundai and Kia manage between them and a fraction of Tata's and Mahindra's numbers, and it shapes two things you will feel later. Parts and software support come through one importer with a thin network, and resale depends on a small pool of second buyers.

BYD's India head told Autocar Professional in February 2025 that Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai were its strongest markets, which is also where the outlets are. If you live in one of those cities, charge at home and keep the car five years or more, the Sealion 7 is a lot of equipment for the money. If your running takes you to smaller towns, or you plan to sell inside three years, a locally built Tata or Mahindra electric SUV asks less and reaches further.
