Should you buy a battery swap scooter in India? The trade-offs
If you have a plug at home and ride under 40 km a day, a fixed battery is still the cheaper, simpler buy, and Honda's own sales split shows why Indian buyers keep choosing it.

Honda Motorcycle ActivaShort answer first. If you park where you can run a cable, a scooter with a battery you charge yourself is the better private buy. Swapping earns its keep when you ride long hours, cannot charge where you sleep, or cannot afford downtime, which is why India's swap networks are full of e-rickshaws and delivery riders and nearly empty of private commuters.
The clearest evidence is Honda's own. The Activa e: runs on two Honda Mobile Power Pack e: packs, makes 6.0 kW peak and claims 102 km on the IDC cycle, and is sold only in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai because it cannot be charged at home at all. Its cheaper stablemate, the QC1, has a fixed battery and a portable charger. Between February and July 2025, Honda dispatched 5,201 of the two scooters, and 4,461 of those were QC1s. The Activa e: accounted for 740.

- Activa e: (swap only)740 unitsThe QC1 charges from a portable charger at home. The Activa e: can only be refuelled at a Honda e:Swap station

Honda has not built either model since August 2025. In the first year, February 2025 to January 2026, 11,168 units were produced and 3,723 reached customers.
What you gain, and what you give up
You gain time and you shed battery risk. A swap takes about a minute, and the pack is never yours, so a capacity fade or a dead cell is the network's problem, not a bill you pay in year five. Honda Power Pack Energy India keeps ownership of the packs, which is how the scooter's sticker price stays below a comparable fixed-battery model.
What you give up is control of your energy cost. Honda's plans are reported at ₹678 plus GST for 20 kWh a month, about 600 km, then ₹1,999 for 35 kWh and ₹3,599 for 87 kWh, with overage billed at ₹70 per kWh on the Lite plan and ₹35 per kWh on the bigger ones. Compare that with a domestic Bescom unit at home. You also give up geography. A swap-only scooter is tied to the network's map, so a move to Mysuru, Hubballi or your village turns it into furniture. Honda said it wanted 250 stations in Bengaluru, 150 in Delhi and 100 in Mumbai by March 2026. Autocar India reported over 80 live in Bengaluru.
Where swapping genuinely wins
Look at the commercial side and the picture flips. Indofast Energy, the IndianOil and SUN Mobility joint venture, claims over 2,050 swap stations, more than 82 million swaps, over 137,000 vehicles onboarded and swaps in about 60 seconds. That is an e-rickshaw and gig-fleet business. For a driver doing 120 km a day with no socket at home, a 60 second swap beats a 4 hour charge every time, and the monthly fee is simply the fuel bill.
Five things to settle before you sign
One, is there a station within about 2 km of your home and your usual route, and how many charged packs does the app show there at 9 pm. Two, what is the overage rate once you cross the plan's kWh, because a long ride weekend gets expensive. Three, can the scooter also charge off a wall socket, which keeps you mobile if a station goes dark. Four, what happens to your plan and the vehicle if you move cities or the network shuts a site. Five, resale, because the next buyer must also accept a monthly subscription and live inside the same map.
Buy a swap scooter for the ride pattern, not for the novelty.
