Restomod, continuation or replica: what you are buying from a US builder, and which one India will let in
The three kinds of American classic-car build are legally very different animals, and only one of them has even a narrow route onto an Indian number plate.

Porsche 911Short answer first. A restomod is a real old car rebuilt with modern parts, and it keeps the original chassis and VIN. A continuation is a brand new car built by the original marque to its own old series, carrying a fresh serial number. A replica is a new car built by someone else to look like an old one. For an Indian buyer, only the first has a legal route in, through the vintage import window, and even that route usually closes the moment the builder swaps the engine.
The three things an American builder actually sells
Classic Recreations, an authorised Shelby licensee in Oklahoma, is clear about which business it is in. The company says every build starts with an original Mustang, and that the car keeps original Ford steel and the original factory VIN. The shell is then stitch welded, given subframe connectors, modified crossmembers and reinforced torque boxes, and fitted with a 5.0 Coyote V8 or a supercharged motor quoted at up to 800 plus horsepower. The car is old. Almost everything that makes it go is new.
A continuation is the opposite. Shelby American lists the CSX6000 427 S/C Cobra as a continuation of the original big block roadster, with a hand laid fibreglass or hand formed aluminium body on a four inch diameter DOM steel frame, and a CSX serial number from the factory series. Note one detail buyers miss: Shelby's own page says engine and transmission are not included. You are buying a rolling chassis and bodyshell, and the price you hear quoted is rarely the price of a running car.
A replica is a new car wearing an old shape, with no factory lineage at all. In the United States these became properly legal as turnkey cars only after NHTSA finalised the low volume rule. SEMA says manufacturers may build up to 325 replica cars a year, the car being copied must have been made at least 25 years earlier, the engine package has to come from an EPA certified vehicle or a CARB compliant package, and the builder has to register with NHTSA, the EPA and CARB and file annual production reports.

What each one looks like at an Indian port
India's vintage window is the only soft entry. Cars that are 50 years or older can now be imported licence free on a rolling basis, so 1975 cars qualified in 2025 and 1976 cars in 2026, with age counted from the date of first registration after the initial sale. The car must be for your own use, resale in India is prohibited, and Autocar India puts customs duty, GST and registration together at roughly 250 per cent of the traded value.
That rules out continuations and replicas immediately. A CSX6000 built this year is a new car no matter how 1965 it looks, so there is no vintage claim to make.
It also catches most restomods. Under Rule 81A, a vintage motor vehicle has to be at least 50 years old, maintained in its original form, and must not have undergone a substantial overhaul, which includes changes to the chassis or body shell and the engine. A Coyote swap and a reinforced unibody are exactly that. Vintage registration is also a restricted licence, meant for display, exhibitions, rallies and occasional runs rather than daily use, and evo India lists the registration fee at ₹20,000 with ₹5,000 for renewal.

Three questions to ask before you pay a deposit
Ask what the title and the VIN say, not what the brochure says, because that is the document Indian customs will read. Ask whether the quoted price includes engine and gearbox. And if the car is meant to be registered here rather than kept for a private collection or track use, get a written opinion from a customs broker before the deposit, because the build's legal identity decides the outcome, not its shape.
