Preserved, restored or restomod: which classic to buy in India

Porsche's own three workshop categories, the Charter of Turin and India's vintage registration rules together tell you what each kind of old car will cost you in money, eligibility and resale.

Preserved, restored or restomod: which classic to buy in IndiaHindustan Motors Ambassador

The short answer. If you want to show the car, buy the most original example you can afford and spend the rest on preservation. If you want to drive it next weekend, buy one that has already been properly restored and ask to see the bills. If you want air-conditioning, discs and a modern gearbox, buy a restomod with your eyes open, because that car is worth what the next buyer who shares your taste will pay, and nothing more.

Those are not three opinions. They are three different jobs, and the trade has names for them.

The three jobs a workshop actually does

Porsche runs a competition for its own dealer technicians, the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge, and it splits entries into exactly these three buckets. Porsche defines Preservation as "maintaining originality while improving functionality", Restoration as "returning vehicles to near-factory condition following original specifications", and Individualization as creativity inspired by its Sonderwunsch philosophy of one-off cars built to an owner's vision. The 2026 edition drew 60 entries from US Porsche Centres, after 73 in 2025, and the finals were held at Luftgekühlt 12 in Fayetteville, Georgia in October 2026. Harper Porsche won overall with a 1978 911 Turbo 3.3. A 1996 911 Turbo took Preservation and a 1997 911 Carrera took Individualization.

Read that list as a shopping guide. A preserved car keeps its paint, its trim and its history, and the work goes into brakes, fluids and electrics so it runs. A restored car has been taken apart and put back to specification, which is the most expensive of the three to do honestly. An individualised car is a new vehicle wearing an old shape.

What originality buys you, and what it costs

FIVA's Charter of Turin, in force since 29 January 2013, is the document judges and clubs lean on. As summarised by Sports Car Digest, it treats preservation as protecting the vehicle in its original state, rejects a "better than new" finish, and does not endorse work that chases a factory-new appearance without historical accuracy, because that can strip a vehicle of its cultural and historical significance.

That matters at the top of the Indian calendar. The second Oberoi Concours d'Elegance ran at The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur from 20 to 22 February 2026, with Sandra Button, chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, as chief judge and David McKirdy chief judge for motorcycles. Entries went through a selection committee, and the classes included pre-war and post-war cars plus Indian heritage divisions for Maharaja and motorsport cars. Nothing on that lawn rewards a modern engine swap.

Parts decide the rest. Porsche says nearly 85,000 Porsche Classic Genuine Parts are available to its technicians. For an Ambassador, a Padmini or a cast iron Bullet, you are dependent on the fabricator your workshop uses, so ask to see the old part next to the new one before you pay.

The India math before you sign

A 50-year-old car that has been modified can fall outside India's vintage route. MoRTH's rules define a vintage motor vehicle as one over 50 years old, kept in its original form without substantial overhaul. Registration is ₹20,000 for a new registration and ₹5,000 for re-registration, with the certificate issued within 60 days, and the vehicle may not be used for regular or commercial running.
