PPF or ceramic coating: what each one actually protects against, and what it costs in India

Paint protection film is a thick plastic skin that takes stone chips, a ceramic coating is a thin chemical layer that makes the car easier to wash, and in India one costs four to five times the other.

Here is the short answer, from the brands themselves. Paint protection film, or PPF, is a sheet of thermoplastic polyurethane stuck over your paint, thick enough to absorb an impact. A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a very thin hard layer, and it does nothing useful against a flying stone. XPEL's own FAQ puts it plainly: film is better at preventing physical damage like scratches and chips because of its thicker, impact-resistant layer, while a coating is the one that gives you a water-repelling surface that shrugs off dirt.

Garware Hi-Tech Films, which makes PPF in India, says the same thing in its own comparison table. It describes PPF as a physical film that shields against impact, UV and chemicals, and a ceramic coating as a liquid layer that shields against chemical and UV attack only. CarzSpa, which runs detailing studios across India, lists the physical barrier against flying stones and road debris, and resistance to door dings and scuffs from walls and pillars, as things film does that coating alone cannot.

What each one is made of

Garware's films run 175 to 195 microns, roughly 6 to 7 mil, in TPU. They have a self-healing top coat, which means light swirl marks close up when the panel gets warm. XPEL's Ultimate Plus is 8 mil. XPEL is clear about the limit of the trick: deeper scratches that go through the film will not fully heal.

Warranty is where the tiers separate. Garware quotes about 3 years on entry-level film, 5 years on mid-tier and 8 years to lifetime on its premium and Titanium products, with anti-yellowing and anti-cracking cover. XPEL quotes a 10-year limited warranty on its COLOR PPF against yellowing, blistering, cracking and delamination.

Coatings are measured in years, not microns. CarzSpa says a good ceramic coating lasts 2 to 5 years with proper upkeep. The Detailing Mafia says two to five years as well, with premium products claiming five years or 75,000 km. Note that the same studio's page also lists swirl marks and scratches among what a coating defends against. Read that as resistance to wash marring, not protection from a chipped bonnet on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.

What it costs in India

CarzSpa's Delhi-NCR price guide is a useful benchmark because it splits both jobs by body type. PPF is roughly ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 on a hatchback, ₹80,000 to ₹1,40,000 on a sedan and ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,00,000 on an SUV. Ceramic coating on the same cars is ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 and ₹25,000 to ₹45,000.

Coating prices stretch much further than that at the top. The Detailing Mafia's own range runs from ₹11,000 on a hatchback to ₹68,000 on a high-end luxury car, and ₹5,500 to ₹14,000 on a bike. So "ceramic coating" on a quotation tells you almost nothing until you know the product, the number of layers and the paint correction included.

How to spend sensibly

If stone chips on the bonnet and bumper are what bother you, buy film, and buy it only where it matters. Full-front film is the sane middle path on a Swift or a Creta sized car. If you want gloss and a car that rinses clean, buy the coating.

The two are not rivals. XPEL says you can coat over PPF, and that its Fusion Plus coating will not void the film warranty. Aftercare is the same either way: XPEL asks for a two-bucket hand wash with a soft microfibre mitt, and warns that automatic washes with harsh brushes can damage film over time. When film does come off, XPEL says removal done correctly leaves the original paint intact.

Always wondered why coating is so much cheaper than PPF, this clears it up. Still curious how that 175 to 195 micron Garware film actually holds up on Goa's gravel ghat stretches and potholes, anyone seen real chip test videos or is it all lab talk.
