Mugen, NISMO, TRD and TOM'S: which Japanese tuners are owned by the carmaker and which are not

Two of Japan's four best known performance badges sit inside the carmaker and two are separate companies, and the difference decides how you buy the part, who backs it and how easily it is faked.

Mugen, NISMO, TRD and TOM'S: which Japanese tuners are owned by the carmaker and which are notHonda Civic

The short answer first. NISMO and TRD are inside the carmaker. Mugen and TOM'S are separate companies that work very closely with one, which is not the same thing.

That distinction matters more than badge snobbery. It tells you whether a part was signed off with the factory's own data, whether a dealer in Japan will sell it to you over the counter, and how likely it is that the sticker on a car in India is the real thing.

Who owns what

NISMO was established in September 1984 as Nissan's motorsport company. In April 2022 it merged with Autech Japan and the business is now called Nissan Motorsports & Customize Co. Ltd. With motorsport parts and vehicle development sitting in the same company as Nissan's special vehicle work.

TRD was born in August 1976. It no longer exists as a standalone firm. In April 2018 three Toyota group companies were folded together into Toyota Customizing & Development, and TRD now runs as a brand and a motorsport division inside that company, alongside Modellista.

Mugen is the odd one out. Mugen branded parts are made and sold by M-TEC Co. Ltd. Whose published history runs from 1973, and whose own trademark notice states the Mugen name may be used only on products that M-TEC manufactures, distributes or authorises. M-TEC supplies engines and parts to Honda programmes and is a Honda Cars special supporter in Super Formula and Super GT, but the parts come from M-TEC, not Honda Motor.

TOM'S was established on 20 February 1974 and still lists a capital of 10 million yen, with founder Nobuhide Tachi as chairman. It names Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Customizing & Development as business partners, runs Toyota's Super GT and Super Formula teams and sells its own parts and complete cars. Partner, not parent.

Why it changes what you buy

With a factory owned brand, the part is developed against the carmaker's data and distributed through its own network in Japan, which is why so much NISMO and TRD hardware is ordered like a genuine accessory. With an independent house, you are buying from that company and its distributors, and fitment, tuning and after sales sit with you and your workshop.

It also explains the fake problem. Mugen is the most copied badge in India, from exhausts to boot lids, and M-TEC's trademark line is the plain test: if M-TEC did not make, sell or authorise it, it is not a Mugen part whatever the stamping says.

What is actually available here

TRD is the only one of the four that has been sold over an Indian showroom counter. For hardware, suspension is the easiest category to buy properly. Tein's own global dealer list shows two Indian entries, AutoStarke and Tein Sales India Pvt. Ltd. Both in Thrissur, Kerala, which means coilovers bought with a local invoice and a service point rather than a shipping forwarder.

Everything else, NISMO, Mugen, TOM'S, Spoon, HKS and the rest, is a personal import for most owners, with customs and fitment on you. Before you order a body kit, a suspension drop or an exhaust, check with your RTO what your state will accept on the registration certificate. A part being genuine Japanese does not make the change legal here.
