Is a CNG car still worth it in India? The 2026 numbersMaruti Suzuki Baleno

Short answer: yes, if you drive a lot and you live where gas is cheap. In Delhi, CNG is ₹86.98 a kg while petrol sits at ₹102.12 a litre and diesel at ₹95.20, as listed by PPAC on 4 November 2026. The saving does not come from that ₹15 gap alone. It comes from the mileage multiplier. A kilogram of CNG takes a small car much further than a litre of petrol, which is why Maruti's own figures for its S-CNG range read 33.61 km/kg for the Baleno, 28.51 for the Fronx, 26.6 for the Grand Vitara and 26.23 for the XL6.

Run the Delhi numbers. At ₹86.98 a kg and the claimed 33.61 km/kg, a Baleno S-CNG burns about ₹2.6 of fuel per kilometre. To match that on petrol at ₹102.12 a litre, the same car would have to return close to 40 km to the litre. No petrol hatchback in India does. Those are lab figures and your real numbers will be worse in city traffic, but the ratio between the two fuels holds.

Where you fill up decides everything

CNG is not one price in India. From 1 November 2026, it is ₹86.98 a kg in Delhi, ₹90 in Mumbai after a ₹1 increase, ₹99 in Bengaluru, ₹99.50 in Chennai and ₹99.90 in Sonipat. At ₹99 a kg against petrol in the low ₹110s, a Bengaluru buyer is paying almost 90 per cent of the petrol price per unit, and the case rests entirely on the mileage multiplier rather than on cheap gas.

The direction of travel matters more than any single rate. Mahanagar Gas's November increase was its sixth in seven months, and the company blamed the higher cost of input gas. Indraprastha Gas raised Delhi CNG by ₹3.89 a kg to ₹86.98 on 29 August, saying international LNG prices had nearly doubled from pre-crisis levels. City gas retailers now meet a large part of CNG demand with imported LNG rather than cheap administered-price domestic gas, so pump rates move with global prices. Assume more hikes, not fewer, when you build your break-even.

What you actually give up

Boot space is the big one. A factory cylinder, or a pair of them under the floor on some cars, eats luggage room that you do not get back. Power drops too, which is why Maruti lists the 1,197cc Baleno S-CNG at 51.3 kW. Filling is slower than petrol, queues at busy stations are real, and the cylinder needs periodic hydro testing through the car's life. On the plus side, a factory-fitted kit keeps the warranty intact, and Maruti's S-CNG page points to cover of up to 5 years.

Enough buyers have done this sum already. FADA's August 2026 retail data puts CNG and LPG at 25.28 per cent of passenger vehicle registrations, ahead of diesel at 17.21 per cent, with petrol down to 40.85 per cent.

Should you wait for flex-fuel instead?

Not if you are buying now. The government has notified rules covering vehicles that run on blends from E20 up to E85 and E100, which clears the way for flex-fuel cars, but the open question is when pumps will actually sell high-ethanol fuel in volume. Until E85 is as easy to find as CNG, a flex-fuel badge buys you an option you cannot use. PNGRB's own work programme targets 18,336 CNG stations by 2034, so gas remains the alternative fuel with the network in place today.

Buy CNG if you clock long monthly distances in Delhi or Mumbai and can live without the boot. If you drive 600 km a month in Bengaluru, the premium and the lost space will likely cost you more than the fuel saves.
