India's 5-door Jimny vs the 3-door global reviewers drive

Carwow rates the UK three-door 6 out of 10 and cannot even sell it as a car any more, while India builds the five-door at ₹12.54 lakh to ₹14.52 lakh with a 219 litre boot, so here is what carries over from those global reviews and what does not.

No, it is not the same car. The Jimny that fills global YouTube feeds is mostly the three-door, and carwow's own verdict page opens by saying you cannot buy a new Suzuki Jimny in Britain any more unless you take the commercial version, which counts as a van. Carwow gives it 6 out of 10, praises it off road and holds the 85 litre boot and poor on-road manners against it. India gets only the five-door, and Autocar India's road test states that India is the sole producer of the five-door version, which is also shipped to Latin American, ASEAN and some African markets. So when a British channel calls the Jimny impractical, the complaint is mostly about a car you cannot order at a Nexa showroom.

What India's Jimny actually is

Maruti's official Jimny page lists the 1.5 litre K15B petrol with 104.8 PS at 6,000 rpm and 134.2 Nm at 4,000 rpm, a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel drive with a 4L low range, a ladder frame, three-link rigid axles front and rear, six airbags, hill hold assist and hill descent control. Four variants are listed, Zeta and Alpha, each in MT and AT.

Autocar India puts the car at 3,985 mm long with a 2,590 mm wheelbase, 210 mm of ground clearance and a 219 litre boot that opens up to 332 litres with the rear seats folded. Price is ₹12.54 lakh to ₹14.52 lakh ex-showroom on its listing updated on 3 November 2026.

What the extra doors give and take

Car Throttle, which is a British outlet, sent Paranjay Dutt to drive the five-door in India and called it a no-brainer for anyone in a market that sells it. The same review is honest about the cost of those doors. The ramp break-over angle drops by about four degrees against the three-door, the rear seats do not fold flat, the steering has no reach adjustment and some cabin materials feel cheap. That is the trade-off in one line. You gain a usable back seat and a boot that global reviewers never had, and you give up a little of the three-door's extreme geometry on a tight ledge.

The numbers to settle before you sign

Autocar India's road test recorded 0 to 100 kph in 14.59 seconds for the manual and 17.47 seconds for the automatic, with a 1,200 kg kerb weight. Tested economy was 10.86 kpl in the city and 14.74 kpl on the highway for the manual, against 10.04 kpl and 13.56 kpl for the automatic. Those are the figures to argue with yourself about, not a British drag race.

The four-speed automatic is the real decision here. It is the convenience tax for city traffic, and it costs you both acceleration and fuel.

How to use global reviews when you are buying in India

Watch the three-door videos for the hardware that carries over, which is the ladder frame, the rigid axles, the low range and the way the car behaves on rocks and ruts. Watch Indian and export-market five-door reviews for the parts that are different, which are the rear seat, the boot, ride at highway speeds and that four-speed automatic. Ignore everything a UK video says about price, trims and rivals, because the Jimny's price ladder there is set by van tax rules rather than by what a Nexa dealer will quote you. And treat a 6 out of 10 as a score for a two-seat van, not a verdict on the car Maruti builds in India and sells to the world.
