You have paid for paint protection film or a ceramic coating. The short version of looking after it: leave the car alone for the first few days, then hand wash it every one to two weeks with a pH neutral shampoo and two buckets, keep it out of rotating brush machines, and keep the pressure washer lance a metre away from film edges. Everything else is detail.

The numbers come from the makers. XPEL's own care page says wait 48 hours after installation before washing a car with Ultimate Plus, Ultimate Fusion or Stealth film, and 72 hours for its Color PPF. It then recommends a wash every two weeks, says to stay 3 ft away with a pressure washer, and says not to use automatic tunnel washes because they will scratch the finish. Ceramic Pro is stricter on coatings: its aftercare page says do not wash a freshly coated car for at least two weeks after delivery.

The first two weeks decide how long it lasts

Garware Hi-Tech Films, which makes PPF in India, calls the first 7 to 14 days the most critical period because that is when the adhesive bonds properly. If you see small bubbles or a slight haze in that window, do not panic and do not poke at them. XPEL's FAQ says most bubbles formed during installation go away within a few days to a few weeks as the film settles and the adhesive cures.

After that, the enemy is chemistry and grit. Ceramic Pro says not to use any soap or shampoo containing wax or petroleum distillates, or with a pH below 5.0 or above 9.0, and not to wash in direct sunlight. In an Indian summer that single line rules out most afternoon washes in an open parking lot. Garware's aftercare guide adds the ones that matter on our roads: no harsh detergents with alcohol, no rotating brushes, no petroleum based products that can weaken the adhesive and lift edges, and no direct high pressure jets.

The routine, in order

Wash in the shade, on a cool panel. Rinse the car first. Fill one bucket with shampoo and one with clean rinse water, both with grit guards, which is the two bucket method both Ceramic Pro and detailing chain CarzSpa recommend. Do the wheels separately and first, with their own mitt. Work panel by panel, rinsing the mitt in the clean bucket between sections. Rinse thoroughly, because Garware warns that leftover soap stains film. Dry with a microfibre towel instead of letting hard water dry on the panel.

Then the top-ups. XPEL asks for its Ceramic Boost after each wash on PPF and at least once every six months on a ceramic coating. CarzSpa suggests an SiO2 booster spray every 6 to 12 months to restore the water beading. Bird droppings and tree sap should come off within 24 hours, by CarzSpa's reckoning, before they etch the coating.

What it costs, and what the paper covers

CarzSpa's India price list starts at ₹12,950 for a one year CrystalShield Lite coating on a hatchback and runs to ₹40,000 for its seven year Apex package, with SUV prices higher. Its broader ranges are ₹10,000 to ₹40,000 for a hatchback and ₹16,000 to ₹55,000 for an SUV.

Garware says a quality TPU film can last 5 to 10 years in Indian conditions if maintained, with premium films carrying a 7 to 10 year limited warranty. XPEL advertises a limited 10 year warranty against yellowing, blistering, cracking and delamination, and says coating the film with its Fusion Plus will not void that warranty. Garware recommends a professional detail every 6 to 12 months and an inspection every 2 to 3 years for lifting, bubbling or discolouration. Keep the installation invoice and the warranty registration. That is the document a claim rests on.
