Short answer: do not buy a race bike first. The cheapest honest start is a day of coaching on a rented bike at a proper off-road park, which costs ₹5,000 to ₹12,500 depending on the school. The licence is the small part. The bike is the big one, because a genuine motocross machine on sale in India starts near ₹10 lakh.

Step 1: learn on someone else's bike

BigRock Dirtpark in Kolar, about 120 km from Bengaluru, sells a beginner course called BedRock. It is ₹5,000 for a three hour session covering body position, cornering, emergency braking and slalom work on dirt. The bike is not included. Rental is ₹2,500 for half a day and ₹4,500 for a full day, from a fleet that lists the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, Kawasaki KLX 230RS, Kawasaki KLX 140G, the first generation KTM 390 Adventure and the Hero Xpulse 200. Gear rental is ₹1,000.

Indimotard runs a Level 1 course at the same Kolar facility for ₹12,500 inclusive of taxes. That buys a full day of six to eight riding sessions of 20 to 25 minutes each, a 1:5 instructor to student ratio, breakfast and lunch, and a paramedic and ambulance on standby. Bike hire is extra at ₹4,000 for a Honda CRF or ₹3,000 for a Himalayan or an Xpulse, protective gear is ₹1,000 per item category, and a tent for the night is ₹2,500 per person. Two days of this will tell you whether you want to race.

Step 2: the FMSCI licence

Indian racing is sanctioned by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India. For two wheelers there is a Restricted licence and a Full licence, both valid until 31 December of the year of issue. The FMSCI also sells a One Event licence for open status events, which clubs buy in bulk and hand out at the venue after you fill the form, with no doctor's certificate needed. When evo India reported the fee list, the One Event licence was ₹250, a 2W Restricted licence ₹1,250 and a 2W Full licence ₹2,000, all inclusive of GST. Confirm the current rates on the FMSCI licence portal before you pay, because fees are revised.

Step 3: the bike, and where it leads

A road legal enduro is the sensible bridge. The India spec KTM 390 Enduro R is ₹3,36,500 ex-showroom, with a 21 inch front and 18 inch rear wheel, 253 mm of ground clearance and a lowered 860 mm seat. It is not a motocross bike, but it will survive a club event and a ride home.

Full race kit costs properly. The Kawasaki KX450 is ₹9.92 lakh ex-showroom and the KTM 450 SX-F ₹10.25 lakh, while the Ducati Desmo450 MX, which Ducati launched here for ₹17.24 lakh, is sold through select dealers in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune.

Then go racing. The MRF Mogrip FMSCI National Supercross Championship is in its 22nd edition, and round one at Bhoirymbong near Shillong drew more than 140 riders across eight categories, including Junior SX1 and SX2 for ages 10 to 16. Above that sits the Indian Supercross Racing League, which has added a 250cc Group A Indian Futures class for Indian riders only. Thirty Indians registered for it, each of the teams fields two riders per category, and season 3 runs on 19 and 20 December 2026, 23 and 24 January 2027 and 6 and 7 February 2027.
