How to get a dating certificate for your classic bike from India
Marque clubs in Britain will put your bike's year of manufacture on paper from engine and frame numbers, and the fees run from £10 for a BSA to £60 for a Royal Enfield if you are not a member.

Jawa 250 Type 353If you own an old motorcycle whose papers say nothing useful about its age, the quickest honest answer comes from the club that holds the factory records. A dating certificate is a one-page document from a marque club or a national club that states the year, and often the dispatch date, of a machine identified by its frame and engine numbers. For a Madras-built or Redditch-built Royal Enfield, the Royal Enfield Owners Club in Britain charges £25 for members and £60 for non-members, and it keeps separate dating officers for Redditch-built and Indian-built machines. The BSA Owners' Club charges £10 for members and £20 for non-members for an information-only certificate.

Which club holds your bike's records
Go to the marque club first. The Vintage Motor Cycle Club describes itself as the premier organisation approved by the DVLA for dating motorcycles, and its library at Burton upon Trent holds catalogues, spare parts lists, drawings and company archives from the 1880s onwards. Members get free access during opening hours, visits are by appointment only, and the club has warned that its dating service is working through a backlog, so response times are extended. For Japanese machines, the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club issues age-related certificates for bikes 15 years old and above at £35 for members and £55 for non-members, or £70 for membership and a certificate together.

Joining is often the cheaper route if you want more than one certificate. VMCC membership from 1 April 2024 is £95 a year for the Rest of World, which includes India, or £49 for overseas digital only, which gets you the journal online but nothing printed.
What the club needs from you
The pattern is the same across clubs, so get it right the first time. The Royal Enfield Owners Club asks for clear colour side-on digital photos of the completed, MoT-ready motorcycle, photos of the engine and frame numbers with their locations, and your membership number, full name and postal address, all in one email. The BSA club wants rubbings or photographs of the engine and frame numbers, and for an age-related report, photographs of the complete machine from both sides. The VJMC wants the frame number, engine number and VIN plate in a single image, at least one photograph of each side of the complete bike with the wheels in frame, and payment before the paperwork moves.
Two practical points. Dating officers at these clubs are unpaid volunteers, so plan in weeks, not days. VJMC also notes that payment by methods other than PayPal can add a delay of up to 3 weeks, and that its dating letters expire after 12 months.

What it proves in India, and what it does not
A club certificate is evidence of age and nothing more. It does not register anything. In India, a two-wheeler or four-wheeler at least 50 years old, kept in original form and without substantial overhaul, can be registered as a vintage vehicle, with a fee of ₹20,000 for fresh registration and ₹5,000 for re-registration, on Form 20, and the registering authority issues the Form 23A certificate within 60 days. Those vehicles cannot be used for regular commuting or commercial work.
So treat the certificate as the first file in the bike's history folder, alongside the old RC, number rubbings and photographs. It is also the document that settles arguments at a club meet, which is reason enough to spend £10 on it.
