How Formula Drift judging works, now that software scores most of it

Line, angle and style still decide a drift run, but from the 2026 season transponders measure two of those three, and only style is left to the three judges.

Drifting looks like chaos and is scored like gymnastics. In Formula DRIFT, the biggest professional drift series on the show and tuning calendar, a weekend has two parts. First comes qualifying, where each driver runs the course alone and is marked on line, angle and style. Then comes the bracket, where drivers run in pairs, one leading and one chasing, and a panel decides who advances.

What changed for 2026 is who does the marking. Formula DRIFT announced on 23 February 2026 that it had partnered with Race Data Labs to use the Universal Drift Scoring Method, or UDSM, in PRO qualifying. The series says roughly 80 per cent of a driver's PRO qualifying score is now automated, with drift line and car angle quantified entirely by the system. Driving style, the remaining 20 per cent of the score, stays with the existing panel of three judges, because it needs a human to weigh difficulty and the size of a mistake. PRO also went back to a two run qualifying format, while PROSPEC kept its all tandem seeding bracket.

What line, angle and style actually mean

Line is the path the car is supposed to take, set out by inner clipping points the driver must get close to and outer zones the car must reach. Angle is how far sideways the car is held while still under control. Style is the part fans argue about, covering how quickly the driver gets to angle, how little correction is used and how committed the run looks.

Before the UDSM deal, drift.news reported in March 2023 that a qualifying run was weighted at line 40 per cent, angle 30 per cent, style 20 per cent and X Factor 10 per cent, with each judge awarding up to 100 points per run and the scores averaged. X Factor is the wow element, such as heavy controlled throttle or a big angle held at pace.

What the transponders can see

Each car carries a transponder, and the system reads track position, speed, angle and deceleration. Formula DRIFT says it also measures proximity between the two cars in a battle, the difference in angle between them and the difference in speed, and that it can tell how many tyres went off course and provide hard data on deceleration when two cars touch. In other words, the arguments that used to be settled by three people squinting through tyre smoke now start with a number. Race Data Labs says its platform has been capturing drift telemetry for more than three years in 12 different countries.

In the bracket it is still a judged fight. The lead driver tries to run the perfect line and break the chase car, the chase driver tries to shadow it closely enough to look better, and the pair swap roles for a second run.

Where this leaves an Indian drifter

India has no Formula DRIFT round, but the format is the template everyone copies. Mobility Outlook reported on India's first JK Tyre backed drift event, run with three classes split by tyre width, D1 on 215mm to 255mm tyres, D2 on a maximum of 205mm and an Open class, with judges from Japan, Thailand and India marking drift line, angle, style and the speed at which the rear wheel drive cars were balanced. Sanam Sekhon won it on 744 points in a 2JZ swapped Lexus GS 300, ahead of Jugraj Singh Bhurjee on 476 points in a BMW M3.

Practise it on a sealed surface at a sanctioned event, not on a road. The Federal reported that on 25 May 2026 Delhi Police arrested a 23 year old after a viral drifting reel shot on public roads in central Delhi, booked him under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving, and seized the car.
