How drifting is judged: line, angle, style and the 100-point run

A drift run is scored, not timed, and in 2026 Formula Drift handed most of that scoring to telemetry, while India's own drift competition uses the same three-criteria sheet.

Drifting is the one form of car racing where the stopwatch does not decide anything. A drift run is scored by judges against an ideal run that the judges themselves set out before the event. Three things carry the score: line, which is the path the car takes through the marked clipping points and outer zones, angle, which is how much sideways attitude the driver holds, and style, which covers how the drift is started, how smooth it stays and how committed the driver looks doing it.

In Formula Drift, every qualifying run begins at a perfect 100 points and the judges deduct for mistakes, with deductions ranging from 0.25 of a point for something minor to 1.75 for the worst errors, as the series' own scoring explanation describes. So a 98-point run is not a run that earned 98 points. It is a run that lost two.

The battles are a different test

Qualifying sets the ladder. The racing is tandem, two cars on track at once. The higher qualifier leads the first run and the lower qualifier leads the second, so each driver gets one run out front and one in chase. The lead driver has to produce the best version of the qualifying line. The chase driver has to copy that line while staying as close as possible without contact and without straightening the car. If the judges cannot separate them across both runs, they call One More Time and the pair goes again until there is a winner.

Europe's Drift Masters splits the work between specialist judges. From 2025, each line judge scores independently out of 60 points and the final line figure is the average of the two rather than the sum, and the series added an assistant judge running a video review system for disputed calls. That is why top runs there are quoted as scores out of 100, like the 98-point qualifying run James Deane put in at the Warsaw finale in September 2026.

In 2026, the data started doing the measuring

Formula Drift's biggest change for 2026 was not the format, it was who measures what. The series went back to a two-run qualifying for its PRO class after drivers voted out the all-tandem seeding bracket, and it brought in Race Data Labs and a system called the Universal Drift Scoring Method. Roughly 80 per cent of a PRO qualifying score is now generated automatically from car telemetry covering line and angle. The remaining fifth is style, still awarded by the three human judges in the tower. In battles the same telemetry gives judges proximity, comparative angle and speed, deceleration and contact data, and portions of it went on the livestream from the Long Beach opener on 10 to 11 April.

Series president Ryan Sage put the reason plainly, saying the series is "finally able to give our judges the tools they've been asking for, empowering them to make the right decisions with greater certainty and in a shorter time".

What that means for an Indian drifter

India's formal drift competition runs on the same sheet. The first JK Tyre Drift Challenge, held at the Buddh International Circuit on 16 October 2023, put 25 rear-wheel-drive cars in front of a three-member international panel of Alistair Woodham, a former member of the FIA's Drift Commission, Cristiani Nanami Lazaro from Brazil and Tanakorn Lertyaovarit from Thailand. Runs were judged on line, angle, style and speed, and JK Tyre ran the event with the FMSCI to put written norms under a scene that had been informal until then.

Sanam Sekhon won that first edition, and on 31 July 2025 he drifted at 5,798 metres, or 19,023 feet, at Umling La in Ladakh on JK Tyre Levitas XTREME tyres for a Guinness World Record for the highest altitude drift by a car.

If you are building a car for a drift round here, the scoring tells you where to spend. Steering lock, a limited slip differential and consistent throttle response buy you line and angle. Power alone buys you nothing if you cannot hold the car where the judges asked you to put it.
