How custom builds get judged at a show: SEMA's Battle of the Builders, explained

At SEMA the shortlisted builders judge each other, at Bike Shed London nobody judges at all, and the difference tells an Indian builder exactly how to get a bike seen.

Three of the biggest floors in custom culture pick winners in three completely different ways. At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, industry judges first cut the field using build photos and written descriptions, then walk the floor in person before the doors open, and the shortlisted builders themselves vote for the winners. At the Bike Shed Moto Show in London, nothing is judged, every bike on display is invited. At Tokyo Auto Salon there is a separate custom car contest with a Grand Prix. Knowing which system you are dealing with decides whether you fill in a form or simply build something people cannot ignore.

What Battle of the Builders actually asks for

SEMA's rules are blunt. Any builder with a vehicle displaying at the 2026 SEMA Show could enter at semabotb.com before the deadline on 16 October 2026, and the vehicle has to be approved and registered for display. Only the individual who acted as builder may be listed, not the shop, and family members cannot be added as co-entrants.

There are five categories for 2026: hot rod and hot rod truck, 4 wheel drive and off-road, sport compact with import performance and luxury and exotics, BFGoodrich Young Guns for builders under the age of 29 as of 6 November 2026, and, for the first time, motorcycles. Judges pick 50 finalists, 10 from each category, and the Top 12 finalists then serve as judges themselves to decide the category winners and the overall champion. Troy Trepanier took the 2025 overall win with a 1936 Ford Roadster, nine years after his first Battle of the Builders trophy in 2017. SEMA says this is the competition's 13th year, with Mothers and BFGoodrich backing it.

The new bike shootout, and what judges look for

The Battle of the Builders: Bike Builder Shootout runs on the opening day of the show, Tuesday 3 November, live at the Battle of the Builders stage in Central Hall. The panel is Zach Ness of Arlen Ness Motorcycles, Jeff Holt of V-Twin Visionary and Pat Patterson of Led Sled Customs, chaired by Bob Kay. They judge on craftsmanship, design innovation and overall execution, pick a Top 10, and those finalists then settle the Top 3 and the champion. "Motorcycles have always been a vital part of the customization community, and we're excited to officially bring these builders into the SEMA Battle of the Builders spotlight," said RJ de Vera, SEMA's vice president of marketing.

Curated, not judged

The Bike Shed Moto Show at Tobacco Dock in London works the other way. The organisers call every exhibited motorcycle invitational, selected from the best builders in the UK and Europe with guests from the USA, with over 250 custom bikes and over 500 exhibitor brands. There is no entry form that gets you on a plinth, only an invitation. Tokyo Auto Salon, which runs from 15 to 17 January 2027 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, sits in between, a trade and fan show with a custom car contest and a Grand Prix inside it.

What this means for an Indian builder

The hard part at SEMA is not the paperwork, it is physics. The build must be standing on the floor in Las Vegas, which makes freight the real entry fee for a shop in Mumbai, Jaipur or Hyderabad. The sensible ladder runs through judged shows at home first. Bombay Custom Works' Barood, a 1986 Bullet 350 rebuilt largely from scrap metal, won Best Custom Built Bike at Rider Mania 2015, and that kind of result is what gets a shop's name in front of organisers abroad.

One practical lesson sits in all three systems. The first cut, at SEMA and at every invitational show, is made from photographs and a written build description. Shoot the bike properly, keep in-progress images of the fabrication, and write down what you actually made yourself.

Builders judging builders at the top is a solid idea, less chance of some outsider judge favouring loud paint over actual engineering. The motorcycle category being new for 2026 is interesting though, wonder how an EV custom build would even get judged there, no engine swaps or exhaust notes to show off.
