How an Indian off-road crew reaches a global final: the RFC route and the King of the Hammers route
There are two realistic ways out of India and onto a world off-road start line, and only one of them is free.

Force Motors GurkhaIf you want to compete abroad in a 4x4, there are two doors. You can win a national round of a global series and be handed a place, which in India means winning the 4x4 Extreme class at Rainforest Challenge India in Goa. Or you can enter an American race directly, buy the licence, pay the entry and ship or build a car, which is what King of the Hammers in California asks for. The first costs you a season of competition in India. The second costs money from day one.
The RFC route: win in Goa, get the Malaysia ticket
RFC India is the Indian round of the Rainforest Challenge Global Series, run in Goa in the monsoon. The 2026 edition, the 12th, ran from 26 July to 1 August with 62 teams across three classes, 4x4 Extreme, 4x4 Modified and 4x4 Stock, as reported by Turbocharged. Ujjal Namshum with spotter Chethan Chengappa won Extreme for the second year running. The prize that matters here is not the trophy. The top 4x4 Extreme driver earns an automatic entry to the RFC Global Series Finale in Malaysia at the end of the year.
That is the cheapest passport on this beat. You still pay to build and run a car in India, and you still pay to get yourself and a crew to Malaysia, but the entry itself comes with the win. Goa Tourism's own note on the 2025 edition records 77 teams based around Quepem taluka, so the field you have to beat is large and mostly made of experienced club crews.
The ladder is sensible too. Stock is where a largely standard vehicle can run, Modified sits in the middle, Extreme is for purpose-built cars. The official 2026 results release lists Athul Thomas and Binil Babu winning Stock on 1,247 points out of 1,400 and Sarjerao Kawade with Rushikesh Patil winning Modified on 1,633 out of 2,000. You work up through those classes, you do not jump into Extreme.
The King of the Hammers route: register, licence, rookie week
KOH has no invitation. Registration for 2027 opened on 21 September 2026 and is open to anyone who can meet the rules. A current USAC licence is mandatory to compete. Pricing is tiered, which is the part people miss: the returning racer discount closed at 11:59 pm PST on 28 September 2026, regular pricing began on 29 September 2026, and the next price increase lands on 1 December 2026. Enter late and you pay more.

The prize money explains the depth of the field. The organisers announced a minimum purse of $250,000 for 2027, split as $125,000 for Ultra4 racers and $125,000 for Desert Challenge racers.

First-timers go through the Rookie Program, open to drivers who have never competed at KOH as Driver of Record, whatever they have done elsewhere. It costs $2,500, or you can run the required Rookie Program partner decals on your car instead of paying. You attend monthly virtual sessions plus Rookie Week, held from 26 to 30 October 2026, and you must bring a working off-road vehicle. The organisers say a race car is strongly recommended but a capable prerunner or UTV is acceptable. Travel and lodging are on you.
Build to the rulebook, not to Instagram
The 2027 Ultra4 rulebook, version 7, came out on 19 August 2026, early by design so teams have time. Ultra4 has also put a three-year moratorium on class rule changes, saying future revisions will be limited to safety updates and corrections. For anyone spending real money on a car, that stability is the useful bit. The 2027 changes cover shock and tyre requirements in Stock, simplified steering rules in Modified, and higher winch requirements plus permitted tyre sizes in SXS.
The practical advice for an Indian owner is dull and correct. Build to a published rulebook, start in Stock, learn winching and recovery under a clock, and let the Goa result buy your ticket.

Reading this makes me wonder how a near stock Thar would actually fare in that Stock class at RFC Goa, given monsoon mud and those gradients. Also 1247 out of 1400 for Stock winners tells me even "stock" entries are heavily prepped, not showroom spec. Anyone from the club run Stock class there, genuinely curious what mods are allowed.
