Dynamic vs static roof load, explained: can your 4x4 take a rooftop tent?
The number that decides whether a rooftop tent is safe on your vehicle is the dynamic roof load, not the big static figure printed on the rack box.

Mahindra TharThe short answer: look up one figure, your vehicle's dynamic roof load. That is the weight the roof is rated to carry while the vehicle is moving, and it has to cover the rack, the tent, and anything else strapped on top. Horntools, which sells roof tents, puts typical dynamic ratings between 50 kg and 100 kg depending on the model. Thule says all its roof racks are designed to carry up to 75 kg, and adds the part buyers skip: the maximum weight of the system is set by the vehicle itself, so you check with the vehicle manufacturer.
That is why a hard shell two-person tent, which on its own can run close to 60 kg before you add a rack, works on a ladder-frame 4x4 and quietly busts the budget on a hatchback with factory rails.

Static load is the big number, and the wrong one to shop on
Static load is the roof's rating when the vehicle is parked. Horntools notes a car can usually take 200 kg to 400 kg or more standing still, because the weight is spread out and, with a roof tent, part of it is taken by the ladder. As a rule of thumb the static figure is about three times the dynamic one.
So two adults asleep up there is rarely the problem. The problem is 80 kg sitting a metre above the roofline while you are doing 80 kph on a broken state highway, or leaning into an off-camber section on a plantation track. High mass changes how the vehicle rolls and how long it takes to settle. Nothing in a load rating accounts for a pothole hit at speed.

What an Indian rack claims, and what that does not mean
Indian makers now publish both figures. Prad 4x4's expedition roof rack for the Thar Roxx is listed at 120 kg dynamic and 250 kg static, in mild steel, at ₹20,800 including 18 per cent GST. A steel rack is strong, and it also weighs something, and that weight comes off your dynamic allowance before the tent goes on.
A rack rating is not permission. If the rack says 120 kg and your owner's manual says 75 kg, you work to 75 kg. Weigh the rack, weigh the tent, add the awning and the jerry can holder you are already planning, then compare.
Where Indian rules come in
Rule 93 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules caps overall height for a non double-decked vehicle at 3.8 metres and overall width at 2.6 metres, so a closed tent on a Thar is nowhere near those limits. Rule 93 also specifically recognises a luggage carrier fitted to a vehicle built solely to carry passengers, adapted for not more than seven passengers excluding the driver, when overhang is worked out. Rule 93(8) is the one to read twice: load must not project laterally beyond the body, or ahead of the load body, or behind the rearmost point of the vehicle. A tent or rack that sticks out past the sides or hangs over the tailgate is the part an enforcement officer can act on.
A bolt-on rack and a folding tent are accessories you remove. A welded-in bed, kitchen and water tank is a different vehicle. Permanent living accommodation goes down the motor caravan route under AIS-124, the standard ARAI used when it approved the LuxeCamper motorhome in June 2020. Do not confuse the two paths, and do not let a fabricator tell you they are the same.

Good breakdown. Off roading with friends who run Thars and Scorpios, never once heard anyone check the owner's manual for dynamic roof load before buying a rack, everyone just goes by what the rack box says. Is it just me or does Thule mentioning "check with vehicle manufacturer" just get skipped by most buyers anyway.
