Does a Bharat NCAP 5-star rating cover all variants of a car?
A Bharat NCAP star rating belongs to the model as tested and to the exact variants listed on its result sheet, which is why the base trim you are buying may not be on that list.

Citroen BasaltShort answer: no, not automatically. A Bharat NCAP rating is awarded after one car is crashed, and the result sheet published on bncap.in carries a table titled "Ratings are applicable to the following variants". If your trim and gearbox combination is not in that table, the stars are not officially claimed for it.
This matters because showroom staff and brochures tend to say "5-star Bharat NCAP" as though it were a property of the nameplate. It is a property of a tested build.
Read the variant table, not the badge
Take the Skoda Kylaq. Bharat NCAP tested a Kylaq Prestige MT with the 1.0 TSI 85kW engine in December 2024 and scored it 30.88 out of 32.00 for adult occupant protection and 45.00 out of 49.00 for child occupant protection. The applicability table lists four trims, Classic, Signature, Signature+ and Prestige, but Classic appears only in the automatic column. The manual Classic is not ticked.

The same sheet notes that electronic stability control, curtain airbags, pedestrian protection and seat belt reminders are standard across the Kylaq range. That fitment is not optional at the top of the scale: Bharat NCAP's own description of its stars says three stars and above requires exactly those four items.
How the test car is chosen, and how the list grows later
Bharat NCAP does not accept a car delivered by the manufacturer. Autocar India reported, as the rules were published, that the BNCAP team visits the plant and selects the base variant by random sampling. The base variant is the one carrying the safety equipment common to the whole range, so a model with uniform safety kit can be crashed in a higher trim without flattering the result.
Scoring is split between adult occupant protection, marked out of 32 points, and child occupant protection, out of 49. The crash work is an offset deformable barrier frontal impact at 64kph, a side movable barrier impact, and a 29kph side pole test that only cars reaching three stars have to face.
When a carmaker adds trims after the test, the rating does not have to expire. The Tata Nexon result page now carries two revisions, each headed "List of additional variants to which the Ratings are extended", covering variants introduced after the original assessment. No new car is crashed for those rows. They are added on the basis that the safety structure and equipment are the same.
Why the same model name scores differently abroad
Euro NCAP works on the standard European specification and, since 2016, has given some cars two ratings, one for the equipment on every version sold and a higher one when an optional safety pack is fitted. Its ratings run for six years, and a facelift triggers a review of whether the old score still stands.
Global NCAP is the clearest warning against trusting a badge across borders. In its Safer Cars for Africa programme, a Kia Sonet was rated one star for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection. That car had two airbags and ESC as standard, no standard curtain airbags, and Global NCAP found the footwell area and bodyshell unstable. It is not the Indian Sonet. The name is shared, the build is not.
So the useful habit for an Indian buyer is simple. Open the model's page on bncap.in, find the variant table, and check the row for the exact trim, fuel and gearbox you are about to book.

Wait so the badge on the brochure can straight up not apply to the variant you're booking? That's a bit sneaky na. Classic 350 doesn't have this NCAP drama but still, now I'll actually check that applicability table before trusting any "5 star" claim in a car showroom.
