Do you need a permit to drive into the Rann of Kutch? What it costs and where your 4x4 has to stop

Gujarat's online pass for the White Rann at Dhordo costs ₹100 a head for anyone above 12, nothing for the vehicle, and it does not give you the right to drive on the salt.

Yes, you need one. Entry to the White Rann at Dhordo runs through an online permit on the Gujarat government portal at rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in, and the portal says in plain words why it exists: to cut the time and effort spent getting permits at the Bhirandiyara checkpost before you enter the Rann area. Gujarat Tourism links the same portal from its Rann Utsav page and from its news and updates page, so there is no mystery about which site is the real one.

The money is small. Children up to 5 years go free. Children aged 6 to 12 pay ₹50. Anyone above 12 pays ₹100. Both two-wheelers and four-wheelers are listed at ₹0, so the pass is priced per person, not per vehicle. The portal also shows lower rates of ₹20 and ₹40 through its Hope n Hope option. The main traveller has to upload an ID proof for verification, and the portal states it is only for Indian nationals, so foreign passport holders and anyone travelling on a foreign document should sort permission through the local authority instead of assuming the website covers them.

Timing matters more than the fee. The Rann Utsav tent city at Dhordo lists its 2026-27 season as 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, which is the window when the salt is dry, the approach roads are busy and the checkpost is set up for tourist traffic. Outside that window you are dealing with a wet or soft Rann and a lot less help if something goes wrong.

The permit is for entry, not for driving on the salt

This is where Thar and Jimny owners get it wrong. The permit gets you and your passengers to the viewing area. It is not a licence to point the bonnet at the horizon. The Great Rann sits inside the Kutch Desert Sanctuary, which the Gujarat Forest Department lists at 7,506.22 sq km and dating to 1986, making it the largest protected area in the state's list. The Little Rann, the one people reach from Dasada and Bajana, is the Wild Ass Sanctuary, 4,953.70 sq km, notified in 1973. Both are notified sanctuaries, which means vehicle movement is a forest matter with its own permissions and designated routes, and the Rann is also a border belt where entry is controlled at a checkpost.

Practically, that means your plan should be the marked approach, the designated parking and the walk. If you want to drive inside the Little Rann, do it the way wildlife tourists do, with a forest permit arranged through the Dhrangadhra or Bajana offices and a guide, and confirm the current fee and the open season with the office rather than with a resort's blog post.

The Thar side of the story is the same

Rajasthan's version of the question has the same answer. Desert National Park, the protected block near Jaisalmer and Barmer that holds much of the dune country people photograph, is listed by the Rajasthan Forest Department as a national park spread across the two districts. A national park is the strictest category in Indian wildlife law, so the Sam and Khuri style dune runs you see on reels are not a free-for-all. Ask at the forest office in Jaisalmer, take the permit, stay on the track.

Salt crust and loose dune sand both punish confidence. Carry two recovery points, a long strap, a shovel and a way to reinflate tyres, and travel with a second vehicle. Sand that holds a camel will not hold 2 tonnes of SUV.

Good that the fee part is cleared up finally, ₹100 per head is nothing. But the salt driving bit worries me more, with the sanctuary angle people doing random off roading in their Thars are basically trespassing then. Anyone know if Bhirandiyara checkpost actually stops you or just waves you through.
