Do you need a diff lock in India? Thar, Jimny and Gurkha compared

Brake-based locking handles most club trail days in the north and west, but the variant you sign for decides whether you get a real lock at all.

For a normal club trail day at a private venue in Maharashtra, Punjab or the NCR, you do not need a mechanical differential lock. Every 4x4 sold here with low range will get up a slushy climb or through a rutted field on brake-based traction control, decent tyres and a driver who keeps momentum. The locker starts to matter when the wheels stay in the air for long stretches, on cross-axle rock steps, deep ruts and long dune work, and in competition, where a stalled run costs you the stage.

The difference is simple. A brake locking differential uses the ABS sensors to spot the spinning wheel and brake it, pushing torque to the wheel that still has grip. It works, it needs a little speed, and it turns effort into brake heat. A mechanical locker ties the two wheels on an axle together, works at walking pace, and does not fade.

What is actually on sale in India

Autocar India's listing for the Force Gurkha 5-door credits it with four-wheel drive, a low-range transfer case as standard and electronically lockable differentials, with 233 mm of ground clearance, 700 mm of water wading and a factory air intake snorkel. The angles are 39 degrees approach, 36 degrees departure and 27 degrees breakover, at ₹17.83 lakh ex-showroom. That is the cheapest way in India to buy a vehicle built around locking diffs rather than software.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is the bigger seller and the bigger trap. Autocar India lists four-wheel drive only on the MX5, AX5L and AX7L diesel variants, with every other variant rear-wheel drive, and an electronic differential lock on the 4WD cars. Approach and departure angles are 41.3 and 36.1 degrees, with 650 mm of wading. So if you plan to run club events, the 4x4 diesel is not an upgrade you can add later.

The three-door Thar OG now runs from ₹10.32 lakh to ₹18.99 lakh ex-showroom, with rear-wheel drive and 4x4 options and an electronic locking differential on the 4x4 variants. Used buyers need to read the invoice. CarWale reported in November 2022 that Mahindra took the manually locking rear differential off the standard list, kept it as an option on the top LX diesel and dropped it from the petrol entirely, with low-range gearbox and auto hub locks staying standard. Two Thars of the same year can differ on this.

The Maruti Jimny takes the other route. Autocar India's road test describes AllGrip Pro with a manual 2H and 4WD lever, a 4-low range, and an electronic brake locking differential front and rear, with 210 mm of ground clearance and a 1,200 kg kerb weight. No mechanical locker, but very little weight to drag out of a hole, and that counts for more than spec sheets suggest.

Spend the money in this order first

Tyres, rated recovery points, a usable spare and a day of instruction will beat a locker on almost every Indian trail. Club events are built for that. JK Tyre's Xtreme 4Play at Kikar Lodge in Punjab splits the field into professionals in modified cars on natural obstacles and amateurs in non-modified cars on man-made ones, which is the stock-class route into competition.

Buy the lock if your plan is dunes in Rajasthan, Himalayan rock trails or a competition seat. Buy the brake-based car if your plan is six to eight club days a year and a daily drive. And wherever you go, drive at a venue or with a club, not on beaches, riverbeds or forest land where you have no business being.
