Can you still order factory parts for a 40-year-old car? How heritage parts programmes work

Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, JLR and Lamborghini all reissue parts for cars that left production decades ago, and here is how those catalogues work, what they cover and what an Indian owner has to do differently.

Yes, for some makes. A handful of carmakers run permanent heritage parts operations that keep making components for models long out of production, engineered from the original drawings and tooling, and sold through dealers or appointed classic partners. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Lamborghini and Ferrari all do it. No Indian manufacturer runs anything comparable, which is why an Ambassador or a Matador owner lives on club networks and specialists instead.

The important part for a buyer is coverage. These catalogues are not complete, and whether your exact car is in them decides what a restoration will cost.

What a factory heritage catalogue actually covers

JLR Classic sets the clearest rule. Its classic parts business serves models that have been out of production for 10 years or more, and it says the parts are engineered using original drawings, materials and tooling, often made by the original suppliers. On 20 October 2023 it opened two official eBay stores, Official Land Rover Classic Parts and Official Jaguar Classic Parts, with over 5,000 items between them. The main classic parts catalogue is far larger. When we checked the Land Rover section, it listed 196,828 products, with model groupings such as Defender from 1999 to 2016 and the Series 1, 2a and 3 trucks.

Mercedes-Benz Classic runs a parts search covering model series from 1954 onwards, through the 111, 126 and 140 series and others, and in its 140th anniversary year it flagged 140 newly manufactured parts for classic models. Prices are not published. The site tells you to ask a company-owned outlet or an authorised dealer.

BMW Group Classic sells through BMW dealers, a Europe-wide network of certified BMW Classic partners and two catalogues, one for cars and one for motorcycles. If a part is not listed, there is an enquiry form, which is how owners of rarer models get an answer at all.

How a part gets made again

The economics are brutal, so the methods are clever. Porsche Classic, with some 52,000 parts in its range at the time, said in December 2018 that producing small batches using new tools would be largely inefficient, and turned to additive manufacturing instead. Steel and alloy parts are made by selective laser melting, where powdered tool steel in layers under 0.1 mm thick is fused by laser, and plastic parts by selective laser sintering. The example was a 959 clutch release lever. Eight parts were already being made this way, with 20 more under test. Porsche's own account of genuine parts puts the current range at over 60,000 and the distribution at 77 partners worldwide.

Lamborghini's Polo Storico, opened in spring 2015 at Sant'Agata Bolognese, makes original spare parts covering over 65 per cent of the fleet from the 350 GT to the Diablo, and runs a certification of authenticity service that verifies the originality of each individual component.

What this means if your classic lives in India

Three practical points. First, check the catalogue before you buy the car, not after. A W123 or a Series Land Rover is supported. A low-volume variant may not be.

Second, understand the route. Mercedes-Benz will not quote you a price online, so you need a dealer to do it. JLR's official stores sit on eBay UK, which means the shipping and the import formalities are yours to arrange.

Third, Indian heritage support is still a story of clubs. Force Motors' own legacy page records the Tempo Hanseat three-wheeler from 1958, the Tempo Viking from 1964, the Matador from 1969 and the Tempo Trax from 1988 as milestones, with no parts programme attached. For those vehicles, the owners' network is the catalogue.
