Can you enter an Indian off-road competition in a stock Thar? How the classes work

India's big 4x4 events now run separate stock classes for near-factory vehicles, with fewer stages, a cheap one-event licence and the same points system as the modified runners.

Can you enter an Indian off-road competition in a stock Thar? How the classes workForce Motors Gurkha

Short answer: yes. Almost every serious off-road event in India now has a class for a near-factory vehicle, and you do not need a caged, portal-axled monster to get an entry accepted. The 12th Rainforest Challenge India in Goa this year ran a 4x4 Stock class with 21 teams, reserved for near-factory spec vehicles, alongside 16 in 4x4 Modified and 25 in 4x4 Extreme, for 62 teams in all.

The pattern repeats closer to home for readers in the north, west and north-east. JK Tyre's Xtreme 4Play at Kikar Lodge in Punjab, a seven-stage event on an 1,800 acre private forest reserve, splits into Xtreme 4Play for professionals in modified vehicles on natural obstacles and 4x4Play for amateurs in non-modified vehicles on man-made obstacles. The JK Tyre Orange 4x4 Fury in Arunachal Pradesh ran its 27 vehicles in two classes, stock and pro mod, across Namsai and Dambuk.

Fewer stages, same scoring

The split is not only about what is bolted to the car. It changes how long your week is. At RFC India 2026, the Extreme class had vehicle scrutiny on 26 July and then 26 special stages to 1 August. Modified went through scrutiny a day later and did 20 stages. Stock was scrutinised on 28 July and did 14 stages from 29 July. A stock entry is a shorter, cheaper event with less chance of breaking the car you drove there in.

Scoring is by points, not by lap times. Each special stage is worth up to 100 points, with separate winching points in the Extreme class, and penalties are deducted for infractions, one competitor losing 30 points this year. Totals decide the result. Sarjerao Kawade and Rushikesh Patil of Sahyadri Offroaders, Pune, won 4x4 Modified with 1,633 points out of 2,000, after leading from day one. Ujjal Namshum and Chethan Chengappa of Manabhum Off-roader's Club, Arunachal, took Extreme again, and Team Killerbull won Stock.

The paperwork is smaller than you think

For a club trail day you need no licence, only the organiser's consent and your own kit. For a competition run under an FMSCI permit you do need a competition licence, and since 2021 the federation has sold a one-event licence at ₹250 including GST, valid for the single event regardless of how many days it runs, for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. There is no medical certificate for it, and clubs buy the licences in bulk and issue them on site, which is how most first-timers get in.

What you cannot skip is scrutiny. Every one of these events opens with a technical check, and the limits for each class are written in that event's regulations, so read them before you spend on a lift or tyres. A stock class is usually the one that rewards a standard Thar, Jimny or Wrangler with good tyres, a working winch mount and a driver who knows how to use a snatch block.

Where to start, closer to home

The National Off Road League 2026 at Tandem Hills Driftpark and Dirt Track in Gurugram, organised by G Town Enterprises, runs from 28 October to 1 November with stock and modified SUV classes among its entries, and begins with two days of technical scrutiny, training clinics and track briefings before any competition starts. That order matters. Scrutiny, a clinic and a briefing is the correct first off-road weekend, in a fenced venue, not an unmarked trail through a forest or a riverbed where you have no permission to be.

14 stages in stock sounds doable even for a weekend warrior. Wish there was something similar for soft roaders like my Creta, though I know AWD crossovers won't survive half those obstacles. Does any event have a class below stock, for stuff like mine, or is that just asking too much.
