Meghalaya's biggest club off-road competition has a new address. The eighth edition of the AHOR 4x4 Off-Road Challenge, run by the Adventurous Hynniewtrep Off Roaders, was held at Mawsadang in East Khasi Hills in mid-October, with Khasi-language daily Mawphor reporting the closing ceremony on 19 October 2026. State sports minister Wailadmiki Shylla was present, and told the gathering that events like this bring competitors from outside the state and help both sport and tourism in the district. AHOR office-bearers, including vice-president Ferdinand Kharkamni, were named in the same report.

Four classes ran. Stock, Semi-Modified, Modified and Pro-Modified, plus Best Driver and Best Co-Driver awards. Category results had not been published in English by the time this story was filed. We'll update when AHOR puts out the final sheet.

The venue is a village project, not a promoter's

The interesting part of this edition is who owns the ground. In late September, Mawphor reported that a tourism committee at Mawsadang, chaired by Sordar Shnong B. Nongbet, had tied up eight villages. Mawsadang, Pyndenumbri, Niamsang, Lawkhla Mawlong, Lawkhla, Laitdiker, Laitniangthlong and Mawliehpoh, around a plan that includes a tourist information centre, a visitor registration system, homestays, local produce sales and motorboat access, with the off-road challenge as the anchor event. An earlier August report in U Nongsain Hima had AHOR's general secretary, named there as Ferdinand Kharjahrin, saying the club was leaning on the same sponsors and village support that carried its previous editions.

That is the model Indian clubs keep reinventing badly. AHOR's version, durbar-sanctioned land, named villages, a registration desk, homestays taking the spend, is the single most useful thing on this beat for anyone in Pune, Ahmedabad or Gurugram negotiating for a trail. Permission held by a village body, with money visibly landing locally, is what keeps a venue open for an eighth year instead of getting shut after one noisy weekend.

What the classes mean if you own a stock 4x4

AHOR's class structure is the familiar Indian ladder, and the Stock class is where a showroom Mahindra Thar, Thar Roxx, Maruti Jimny, Force Gurkha or Isuzu D-Max V-Cross can genuinely start, tyres, recovery points, a tested jack and a competent co-driver matter more than a lift kit. The money is at the sharp end: at the sixth edition near Nongpoh in October 2024, Kerala's Mehboob K and Shafi CK took Pro Modified and ₹1.5 lakh, with Meghalaya crews winning Semi-Modified (Cameo Lawai, Freddy Mawrie), Stock (Rashid Mukhim, Banker Khongwir) and the Women's class (Philita Syiem, Markynti Warjri). Travel, entry and a build will out-cost the cheque for most privateers. Treat it as a season, not a payday.

North-East form, West India context

The North-East's crews are not making up the numbers any more. At the 12th Rainforest Challenge India in Goa in August 2026, Ujjal Namshum of Arunachal's Manabhum Off-roader's Club, paired with Chethan Chengappa, defended the 4x4 Extreme title with 2,253 of 2,600 points, while Sarjerao Kawade and Rushikesh Patil of Team Sahyadri Offroaders Pune won Modified and Kerala's Athul Thomas and Binil Babu took Stock, 62 teams in all. If you are a club in Maharashtra, Gujarat or Punjab looking for an away round next autumn, Mawsadang now belongs on the calendar. Go through AHOR and the village committee, register, and stay in the homestays, that is the whole point of the place.
