Why Royal Enfield's Himalayan Odyssey is only on its 22nd edition since 1997

Royal Enfield's 2026 ride is billed as the 22nd Himalayan Odyssey tracing back to 1997, but the edition count, a pandemic year that was quietly swapped for a smaller ride, and the company's own past statements point to the annual programme actually starting years after that founding date.

Royal Enfield calls 2026 the 22nd edition of its Himalayan Odyssey, and in the same breath says the ride traces its roots to 1997. Riders doing the arithmetic will notice the two claims do not line up. Twenty two editions since 1997 would mean only a handful of years without a ride in 29 years. The real history has more gaps in it than the marketing copy admits, and most of that gap is one familiar villain: the pandemic.

Why the sums don't add up

The 1997 date refers to a specific expedition, not an annual programme. That year, a group of Royal Enfield Bullet Club riders rode to Khardung La, then billed as the world's highest motorable pass, and the trip became the template Royal Enfield later built an annual ride around, according to the company's own Himalayan Odyssey page and Motorbeam's report on the 2026 edition.

The numbered editions tell a different story about when the annual ride actually began. Royal Enfield's 2014 Odyssey was its 11th, with 67 riders, reported by Autox. The 2017 ride was the 14th, flagged off from India Gate with over 50 riders, according to Orient Publication. By 2018 it was the 15th edition, and Royal Enfield's own president told Bike India at the time that the Odyssey had "for over 15 years" been pushing riders to do more with their motorcycles. Work backward from any of those numbers and the first numbered edition sits in the early 2000s, not 1997. The 1997 ride was the spark. The Himalayan Odyssey as an annual, ticketed, factory-run expedition came later.

The year a smaller ride filled in

Between the 15th edition in 2018 and the 18th in 2022, only three editions were added across four years. That missing year was 2020. Covid-19 was rising through India that August, and instead of the full Odyssey, Royal Enfield ran a scaled down ride called Moto Himalaya: eight days, 950km from Leh out to Khardung La, Nubra, Pangong Tso and the Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes, with 20 riders on the Himalayan 411, as reported by RideApart. It kept the idea alive without the scale or the numbering.

The full Odyssey returned in 2022 as the 18th edition, flagged off from India Gate with 70 riders covering over 2,700km to Umling La, according to Motoroids. By 2024 it had grown to the 20th edition, 122 riders and 3,050km over 18 days, per BikeWale. That puts 2025 at the 21st and 2026 at the 22nd, a run that has otherwise been unbroken since.

What riders get in the 22nd edition

For 2026, Royal Enfield's 125th anniversary year, the Odyssey splits into four formats for the first time, ThrustZone reports: a 16 day Original loop from Chandigarh through Himachal and Zanskar to Umling La for up to 150 riders in two batches, a 10 day unsupported Explore ride for 30 riders, and fly-in Nubra and Kargil circuits out of Leh. The whole spread covers over 2,200km.

For context on how this compares to other factory rides on this beat, BMW's GS Trophy began in 2008 in Tunisia and runs every two years, now ten editions deep, per BMW Motorrad's own history page. Royal Enfield's own Rider Mania, now renamed Motoverse, started in Goa in 2003, closer to the Odyssey's real starting point than its marketing suggests.

None of this makes the ride less real. The Himalayan Odyssey is still the oldest factory expedition of its kind running out of India. It just started a few years after the date on the tin, and lost one more year to a virus that nobody was riding away from.
