Tesla Model Y and Model 3 owners abroad report doors that will not open without power: what NHTSA has said
Three Tesla Motors Club threads between 2022 and 2026 keep returning to the same fear, and the US regulator has now refused a defect petition while promising new door rules, which matters for the Shanghai-built Model Y sold in India at ₹59.89 lakh.

Tesla Model 3What owners abroad keep reporting
We found three separate threads on Tesla Motors Club, the biggest Tesla owner forum outside India, opened between May 2022 and February 2026, that circle the same worry. The door buttons are electric, and the mechanical backup is not where a panicking person would look for it.
A thread on emergency access started in November 2024 runs to at least three pages and around 20 replies. Owners there say a Model Y cannot be opened from outside once the 12V supply is dead, and that the rear manual release sits under the door bin, out of reach of a small child. Posters also point to Tesla's first responder sheet being blank on opening a door from outside without 12V. An older thread from May 2022, about getting children out of the rear seats after a power shutdown and fire, ran to about 20 replies and covered the Model S, 3, X and Y. In both threads, some owners argue the chance of total power loss is very small.
A newer thread, running from February to July 2026 with 10 replies, is a different fault. Owners of Model Ys from 2023 and 2025 report the door unlatches but stays shut, needing a second press or a push on the door, most often on the passenger side and when the car is parked on a slope. Owners write that Tesla's service answer was that pushing the door while pressing the button is expected behaviour. Ten replies is not a pattern, and we are not calling it one.
What the regulator and the maker say

In September 2025, NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation into door handles on the 2021 Model Y, covering 174,290 vehicles in the United States. It had nine owner questionnaires. The most common story was a parent getting out and then being unable to open a rear door, and in four of those cases the parent broke a window to get the child out. NHTSA said the handles went inoperable when the electronic locks received insufficient voltage, with no warning that the 12V battery was about to fail.
- 4 November 2025A petition asking NHTSA to write rules on emergency door releases is filed
- 7 November 2025A Model 3 owner files a defect petition over hidden manual door releases, covering 179,031 vehicles
- 24 July 2026NHTSA denies the defect petition and grants the rulemaking petition, with no timeline given

A separate owner petition, DP25-002, came from a driver whose 2022 Model 3 lost all electrical power and caught fire after a head-on crash. He could not find the mechanical release and climbed out of a rear window. NHTSA denied that petition on 24 July 2026, under docket NHTSA-2026-1553, saying only one complaint matched the allegation out of 179,031 vehicles, and that the federal door lock standard FMVSS 206 sets no requirement on the labelling or location of a mechanical release. In the same decision the agency granted a rulemaking petition filed on 4 November 2025, and said a concealed or hard to locate release could stop an occupant getting out in a crash or fire. It gave no timeline. China has gone further: its new door handle standard takes effect on 1 January 2027 and requires mechanical releases inside and out, which rules out press-to-release handles of the Model Y type.
Does the Indian car share the part

Yes, as far as we can tell. The Model Y sold here is a full import, launched on 15 July 2025 at ₹59.89 lakh for the Standard RWD and ₹67.89 lakh for the Long Range RWD, and Indian cars come from Tesla's Shanghai plant. That is the interesting part. The Chinese rule from 1 January 2027 is the most likely route by which the handles change for Indian buyers, since Indian stock is built in China, though Tesla has not said anything about it. We found no Indian rule that requires a mechanical door release.
What an owner can do now
Find both releases before you need them. Open the Doors section of the manual on the touchscreen, then physically try the front release and the rear release cable with your family, including anyone who sits in the back. Teach rear passengers where theirs is, and do not leave a child alone in the car. Treat any low voltage battery warning as urgent and get it logged at the service centre in writing, with the warning message noted on the job card. If a door fault is dismissed as normal, ask for the service bulletin or internal instruction it is based on. If that fails, write to Tesla India customer support and keep the reply, and escalate to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or your district consumer commission.
Model Y owners in the club: have you located both manual releases in your car, and did your delivery handover cover them? Tell us what you found.
