Tata Nexon 1.2 turbo owners report oil cooler failure turning coolant into a "milkshake": what is known

Team-BHP threads on Tata's 1.2 Revotron turbo petrol describe engine oil mixing with coolant after the oil cooler gives way, with repair estimates around ₹55,000 and extended warranty cover refused in at least one case.

A small but persistent set of Tata owner reports keeps coming back to one part: the engine oil cooler on the 1.2 litre Revotron turbo petrol. The symptom owners describe is hard to miss. The coolant in the expansion tank turns pale and thick, described on Team-BHP as a "milkshake", because engine oil has found its way into the cooling circuit. Some cars get there via an overheating warning and a tow, others only when a service advisor opens the bonnet for an unrelated job.

What owners describe across the threads

Searches surface two long Team-BHP discussions and two Team-BHP news write-ups built on owner threads. In the most detailed case, a 2021 Nexon petrol that had done about 42,000 km went in for a belt tensioner noise and the dealer found mixed oil and coolant. The failure was traced to the oil cooler. The estimate sent to the owner was around ₹55,000, and the owner's account is that the full job was not covered, because only some of the parts in the estimate fell under the extended warranty. Owners say that is the sting in the tail. The oil cooler itself may be a warranty item, but doing the job properly means flushing the system and replacing parts the oil has passed through, including the radiator and the heater core.

Team-BHP's technical write-up on the issue says the cooler sits at the front of the block, below the turbo oil return line and close to the exhaust manifold, with part metal and part rubber plumbing in a hot, poorly ventilated spot, and that reported failures have ranged from about 6,000 km to 24,000 km. In one thread an owner counted more than 10 such cases on Team-BHP alone and named the Tiago and Tigor JTP, Altroz iTurbo and Nexon as sharing the engine. That is an owner's count, not a verified figure, and a single post is not a pattern. What the threads do show consistently is the same diagnosis from different dealers and the same argument about what warranty covers.

What Tata says, and what it does not

We found no recall and no service campaign for this. Tata Motors' public notice page carries only one passenger car recall notice, the 2018 voluntary emissions campaign on the Tigor 1.05 RTQ BSIV diesel, and nothing on the oil cooler. There is no public statement from Tata Motors on oil cooler failures on the 1.2 turbo petrol that we could find, and no technical service bulletin in the public domain. On the complaint board consumercomplaints.in, a search for "Nexon oil cooler" returns only 2 entries, from cars bought in 2020 and 2021, so this is being argued out on forums and at service desks rather than in a regulator's file.

What an owner should do now

Open the coolant expansion tank at every fill and look at the colour. Cloudy, creamy or brown coolant, a rising temperature gauge or coolant loss with no visible leak are the warning signs, and continuing to drive risks the engine, not just the cooler. Ask the dealer to put the diagnosis in writing on the job card, part by part, and to state which items are covered by the standard or extended warranty and which are not before work starts. Ask specifically whether the radiator and heater core are being flushed or replaced. If the answer is a flush on a car with mixed oil and coolant, get that in writing too. Keep every invoice. Escalate beyond the dealer to Tata Motors customer care on 1800 209 8282 and ask for a complaint number, and if that stalls, the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or the NCH app.
