Owners keep asking if their pre-2023 bikes are safe on E20 petrol: Royal Enfield's ₹1,700 BS4 kit and what each maker says

The question comes up again and again on Indian biking forums, and the best-supported answer now combines each maker's compliance date, the Petroleum Ministry's own numbers and a cheap parts kit sitting at Royal Enfield service centres.

Since E20 petrol became the default at Indian pumps, one question has refused to go away on two-wheeler forums: is my older bike going to be damaged by it, and does the owner's manual that says "10 per cent ethanol" still matter?

What owners keep asking

The question is not new. On an xBhp Hero Splendor ownership thread, posts from 31 January to 9 February 2017 already worried about ethanol being hygroscopic and about corrosion in a design that old, with another member arguing that makers account for fuel blends at every emission step. On xBhp's long Honda CBR 250R ownership thread, posts dated 20 March and 3 April 2023 go straight to the paperwork. One owner posted a manual page reading "Do not use petrol that contains more than 10 % ethanol", with warnings about damage to the fuel tank, rubber tubes and drivability, while another said their 2012 CBR 250R manual set the limit at E20. So even within one model, owners found two different printed limits.

Those are the two xBhp threads I could open, spanning 2017 to 2023. Search results also show a long Team-BHP motorbikes thread collecting real-life cases of ethanol damage on older vehicles, and a separate Team-BHP technical thread on the impact of 20 per cent ethanol, which I could not open. Treat all of it as owners' reports, not test data.

What the makers and the government say

Makers have given dates, and they do not match. Autocar India's explainer lists Bajaj as material-compatible going back to its BS4 motorcycles from 2017, Royal Enfield's entire portfolio as compliant since BS6 in 2020, TVS as E20 material-compliant since 2023, Hero MotoCorp from April 2023 and Honda for all new two-wheelers produced from April 2025. Hero's own line is that there is "marginal impact on fuel efficiency" and no serious challenge at this stage. The same report says an industry panel clarified that makers will honour warranties on older vehicles running E20 regardless of what the manual says.

On mileage, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on 12 August 2025 that talk of a drastic drop is misplaced, offering its own example of a car going from 15 kmpl to 14.7 kmpl, and said testing by ARAI, IIP and Indian Oil found no significant variation or abnormal wear over 1,00,000 km. The ministry did concede the part owners care about: some rubber parts and gaskets may need replacing in certain older vehicles after 20,000 to 30,000 km, cheaply and during normal servicing. Autocar India's bike explainer, by contrast, cites reported efficiency drops of 3 to 20 per cent depending on age and riding style.

The most concrete answer is a part number. Autocar India reported on 23 February 2026 that Royal Enfield service centres stock an E20 conversion kit for BS3 and BS4 carburetted 350cc UCE bikes, the Classic 350, Bullet 350 and Thunderbird, with O-rings, tubes and seals that last better on ethanol. Dealers quoted ₹1,700 for the BS4 kit. There is no dedicated kit for the 500cc engines, where RE instead suggests upgrading some fuel system parts. Some dealers Autocar India spoke to had no stock, so call ahead.

What an owner can do

Check your bike's build month against your maker's compliance date, not the model name. If it is a carburetted BS3 or BS4 Royal Enfield, ask your service centre for the E20 conversion kit by name and get the quote in writing. At every service, ask the technician to inspect the inside of the tank for rust and the fuel lines for swelling or weeping. Keep the tank full if the bike will sit for weeks, because a part-full tank is where phase separation starts. If a dealer blames E20 to refuse a warranty claim, cite the industry panel's position, escalate to the maker's customer care in writing, and then to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.

What does your pre-2023 bike's manual say about ethanol, and has your mileage actually changed? Post your numbers in the club.

My Classic is BS6 so technically falls in RE's "compliant since 2020" bucket per that Autocar list, but the ₹1,700 kit bit isn't clear to me, is that only for pre-BS6 carb bikes or does every service centre keep it stocked regardless of model year? Would want specifics before assuming mine is sorted.
