Owners keep asking how to check if an Indian VIN has an open recall: what SIAM, Parivahan and NHTSA actually show
A model recalled in the US, UK or Canada is not automatically recalled here, and the India check runs through two different websites, so here is the order to do it in.

Ford EndeavourOne question keeps coming back on Indian forums every time a recall makes the news abroad. My car or bike is the same model, so am I covered, and where do I even check? Team-BHP pages would not open for this desk, so we are going by what the search results themselves show, and they show several separate threads on exactly this: a long one titled around a Ford Endeavour 3.2 automatic gearbox failure "recalled in other countries, but not in India", a thread on the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R being recalled in the US and Europe with no word on India, a multi-page thread on the Skoda and Volkswagen seatbelt recall here, threads on Honda's fuel pump recalls, a running Global Recalls thread, and a thread on the government's own recall portal. We are naming no poster and quoting nothing beyond that phrase.
The overseas lookups cover overseas vehicles
The US regulator's data is open. A query to NHTSA's recall lookup for a 2023 Jeep Compass, for instance, returns two campaigns, 23V576000 for an instrument cluster brightness software fault and 24V436000 for radio software that stops the rearview camera image. The UK's DVSA service works off the registration number and shows safety recalls that have not been checked or fixed, along with the MOT history, and it says owners will not usually have to pay for parts or repairs. Transport Canada runs a motor vehicle safety recalls database searchable by VIN and takes defect complaints by form or on a helpline.
All three are national. They cover vehicles sold in that market, with that market's VIN ranges and supplier batches. A campaign number from any of them is a reason to go and check your own car's status, not proof that your car is in it.
In India the check is two steps
Step one is the recall list. SIAM runs a voluntary recall portal at the behest of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, with entries going back to 2012 and running into 2026, each showing the maker, the model, the defect, the manufacturing date range and the number of target vehicles. Recent entries include the Maruti Grand Vitara on 14 November 2025 for 39,506 vehicles over a fuel level indication defect, the Kia EV6 on 19 February 2025 for 1,380 cars over the integrated charging control unit, and Honda two-wheeler recalls as small as 96 units of the CMX500A and 22 units of the CB 1000 Hornet.
Step two is your own VIN. The list tells you a recall exists, the maker's page tells you if your vehicle is in it. Volkswagen India's recall campaign page, for example, asks for the 17 character VIN and states that the repair is carried out completely free of cost, with jobs ranging from 10 to 15 minutes to about 3 hours.
If nobody has recalled anything and you think there is a safety defect, MoRTH's vehicle recall portal on the Parivahan website lets owners register a complaint, and as reported when it went live in July 2021, the vehicle has to be less than seven years old. Complaints are counted, and under rule 127C of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules the designated officer is informed once enough owners report an identical defect.
What an owner can do
Note your VIN from the RC and the chassis plate. Check the SIAM portal for your maker, then the maker's own VIN page. Ask the dealer in writing for the campaign name and whether your VIN is listed, and insist that free-of-cost work is shown as zero on the invoice. If the defect is real and unrecalled, file on the Parivahan recall portal, write to the maker's customer care, and escalate to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
Club members: has your VIN ever come up positive on a recall check you ran yourself, before any dealer called you?
